About the Role
- The Peer Specialist- SSP (Part Time) plays a vital role in supporting individuals who are navigating challenges related to substance use and mental health by providing empathetic, lived-experience-based guidance and encouragement.
- This position focuses on building trusting relationships with clients, fostering hope, and promoting recovery through shared understanding and mutual respect.
- The Peer Specialist will work within a Syringe Services Program (SSP) environment to engage clients in harm reduction strategies, connect them to community resources, and advocate for their needs.
- By leveraging personal recovery experiences, the Peer Specialist helps reduce stigma and empowers clients to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
- Ultimately, this role contributes to improving client outcomes and enhancing the overall effectiveness of the SSP team through compassionate peer support.
Minimum Qualifications
- Personal experience with recovery from substance use or mental health challenges.
- Completion of a recognized Peer Specialist training program or certification.
- Ability to communicate effectively and empathetically with diverse populations.
- Basic computer skills for documentation and communication purposes.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within Syringe Services Programs or harm reduction settings.
- Familiarity with local community resources related to substance use and mental health.
- Additional certifications related to peer support or behavioral health.
- Bilingual abilities to serve diverse client populations.
- Experience working in a part-time or flexible schedule environment.
Responsibilities
- Engage with clients in a non-judgmental and supportive manner to build rapport and trust.
- Provide peer support and share lived experiences to encourage clients in their recovery journey.
- Assist clients in accessing harm reduction supplies and education within the Syringe Services Program.
- Connect clients to community resources such as healthcare, housing, and counseling services.
- Advocate for clients’ needs within the program and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive care.
- Document client interactions and progress accurately in accordance with program policies.
- Participate in ongoing training and team meetings to enhance skills and program effectiveness.

- The Peer Specialist utilizes strong interpersonal and communication skills daily to establish meaningful connections with clients, fostering a safe and supportive environment.
- Empathy and active listening are essential to understanding client needs and providing appropriate peer guidance.
- Organizational skills are applied to maintain accurate records and coordinate referrals to community resources effectively.
- Problem-solving skills help the Peer Specialist address challenges clients face and advocate for their needs within the program.
- Additionally, cultural competence and adaptability enable the Peer Specialist to work effectively with diverse populations and respond to the dynamic nature of harm reduction services.
