Performs non-invasive cardiac procedures including ECGs, stress tests, and Holter monitor hook-ups for adult and pediatric patients. Responsible for recognizing acute cardiac rhythms and responding as part of the Code Blue emergency team.
Requires six months of experience as an ECG technician or completion of an accredited program. PALS and ACLS certifications from the American Heart Association must be obtained within three months of hire.
The Cardiology EKG Technician I performs various non-invasive cardiac procedures, including stress testing, Holter monitor hook-up, ECG’s, and pacemaker, event monitoring and remote monitoring for adults. These procedures are performed following established department and Medical Center policy and procedures. Performs all clinical procedures for adult and pediatric patients per Departmental policy.
Recognizes basic cardiac rhythms including EKG changes of acute MI, V TACH, V Fib or heart block and provides intervention as indicated.
Initiates Code Blue and emergency measures when indicated according to BCLS and hospital policy.
Responds as part of the “Code Blue” team.
Prepares testing area for procedure, including necessary forms, charts, equipment and
Prepares patient for electrocardiogram and stress testing utilizing proper lead placement and skin preparation.
Assists physician during exercise testing.
Performs Holter monitor hookups and removal.
Operates transtelephonic ECG monitoring equipment for pacemaker clinic and/or arrhythmia analysis.
Performs ECG’s/SAECG’s on adult patients.
Edits and distributes ECG’s.
Prepares test results for interpretation and dictation; completes work process before end of shift.
Orders supplies and maintains appropriate stock levels.
Maintains clean and safe work/patient environment.
Initiates equipment maintenance and repair as needed.
Assists with orientation and training of new employees/volunteers.
Utilizes appropriate and effective communication and problem solving skills in all interpersonal interactions.
Participates in staff meetings and in-service training.
