The Ophthalmic Technician provides clinical support by performing various diagnostic tests and assisting with patient evaluations. They are also responsible for maintaining exam room readiness and ensuring patient safety protocols are followed.
A High School Diploma or GED and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the AHA are required. No prior experience is necessary, but proficiency in communication and basic computer literacy is expected.

General Description: The Ophthalmic Technician provides clinical support by performing diagnostic testing, assisting with patient evaluations, and maintaining exam room readiness. Essential Responsibilities: Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. Provides direct patient care by taking vitals, patient history, referrals, and patient phone messages under direct supervision of the provider and/or clinical supervisor. Accurately collect and document medical and ocular history in an electronic medical record. Perform ophthalmic tests including Visual Acuity, Lensometry, Pupillary Assessment, Ocular Motility, Tonometry, Retinoscopy/Refractometry, Glare Testing, Topography, Color Vision, Amsler Grid, Stereopsis, Dry Eye Testing, Pachymetry, Confrontation Visual Field Testing, OCT, ASCAN, and Automated Perimetry. Prepare and stock exam rooms, laser rooms, and minor procedure areas. Sterilize, package, and maintain ophthalmic instruments and equipment. Perform basic equipment maintenance and report malfunctions. Uphold infection control and patient safety protocols in all clinical activities. Transport patients in various clinical areas as needed. Perform other administrative and clinical duties as needed to optimize patient flow. General Responsibilities: Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
Effective communication skills, including clear verbal interaction and accurate written documentation. Ability to deliver patient care in a compassionate, professional, and respectful manner. Proficiency in performing ophthalmic procedures and diagnostic tests with accuracy and efficiency. Capacity to work independently under moderate supervision, managing tasks in a fast-paced clinical environment. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills to ensure consistent and high-quality patient care. Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team and contribute to a supportive work culture. Basic computer literacy, including use of scheduling systems and electronic medical records (EMR). Understanding of infection control protocols and safety standards in clinical settings.
