About the role

Provide occupational therapy services and therapeutic interventions based on a supervising therapist's plan of care. Responsibilities include collecting assessment data, documenting patient progress, and educating patients and families on functional independence.

Job Description

Job summary: Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTA / OTA) shall be responsible for providing services

including treatment and therapeutic interventions in an interdisciplinary environment,

consistent with established professional practices and ethical standards according to their

supervising therapist’s plan of care.

Job qualifications

 Education: Must be a graduate of an approved therapy assistant’s certification program

(Associate level unless otherwise determined).

 Personal Job-Related Skills: Can effectively communicate and provide direction to older

adults, and persons with disabilities.

 License and Certifications

Must have a current certificate/license in the state of Texas.

CPR certification is required.

Prior work or educational experience:  Relevant work or clinical experience in a duly accredited hospital, outpatient, or home

health setting.

Physical and mental requirements

 Exerting 50-100 lbs of force occasionally or up to 50 lbs of force frequently. May involve

exerting more than 100 lbs of force in some situations, and up to 20 lbs of force to

constantly move objects.

 Working knowledge and competent capabilities in computer technology.

Behavior standards

 Attendance: Reports for work regularly with a minimum number of absences and

tardiness. Gives notice and submits justifications when absence or tardiness is

unavoidable. Receives authorization when time off is needed. Observes appropriate

lunch and break schedules.

 Productivity and Use of Time: Manages own time and uses appropriate work methods,

techniques, and equipment to achieve the most effective and efficient result in the time

available. Is mutually respectful of time and schedule of others. Balances multiple

priorities and focuses on desired outcome(s).

 Teamwork and Collaboration: Projects a positive work attitude; relates effectively with

coworkers, supervisors, and others; always uses tact and diplomacy, acts professionally.

 Customer Service: Treats patients, visitors and fellow employees with compassion,

dignity and respect.

 Quality and Accountability

Produces work that is complete, neat, accurate, and timely.

Demonstrates self-responsibility and accountability.

 Adaptability, Initiative and Problem-Solving

Adapts to organizational changes (e.g.,

technology, resources, and personnel). Takes initiative in identifying any problems and

takes appropriate steps to resolve them.

 Dress Code: Presents neat and clean appearance; adheres to the appropriate

departmental dress code policy; wears I.D. badge with name visible (on upper body) for

easy identification.

 Communications: Makes sure tone and word selection match the intended message and

audience; uses language and terminology listeners can understand; shows compassion

and understanding in words; understands the tone of voice directly impacts the way a

message is received; listens carefully to others; keeps conversations positive and

constructive; focuses on potential solutions when discussing problems or issues; avoids

gossiping, complaining and the use of profanity.

 Safety: Maintains a neat, organized and safe work area; follow safety policies; uses

proper lifting techniques (e.g. utilize appropriate transfer devices, lift equipment and

body mechanics); report all accidents and safety hazards promptly; takes appropriate

actions to correct or prevent recurrence.

 Timekeeping: Uses time clock consistently when coming to work, leaving work, lunch

breaks, and anytime leaving the facility grounds for personal reasons; turns in

adjustments, leave requests, etc. timely.

Position tasks:  Provide occupational therapy services based on a written plan of care and under the

supervision of an occupational therapist.

 Collect data for an assessment upon delegation by an occupational therapist.

 Work with an occupational therapist in revising a plan of care and/or short-term goals

and properly document said changes at the time of change.

 Interact with a patient/client regarding his/her condition, progress, and /or achievement

of goals during each treatment session.

 Teach other healthcare providers, patients, and families to perform selected procedures

and functional activities.

 Train non-licensed personnel or family members to carry out specific tasks that support

the occupational therapy plan of care.

 Properly document the course of patient care in line with established standards.

 Complete all billing information daily or by set guidelines.

 Complete continuing education/professional development activities applicable to

maintaining licenses and certifications.

 Participate in interdisciplinary meetings.

 Follow all policies and practices of professional organizations, MMH, and the therapy

department.

 Provide patient and family education on tasks and resources that will assist with

continued functional independence.
