Job Description

Summary Performs gross dictation of non-complex surgical cases.

Job Duties Assists in the gross preparation of non-complex surgical examinations Selects and prepare tissue for microscopic examination for permanent sections for light microscopy.

Performs gross description of non-complex surgical specimens.

Assures correct accessioning and numbering of surgical specimens utilizing pathology information system.

Assists, initiates, implements and/or completes special projects as designated by the Lead PA, Pathology Manager or Pathologist.

Ability to work independently with minimum direction.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s Degree Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology or Technical School Diploma Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination. In addition, the individual must have laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Must understand basic medical terminology. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Physical Demands Lift and carry 40-50 lbs.

Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
