About the role

The Cardiology APP provides both inpatient and outpatient services, collaborating with cardiologists for consults and follow-up care. Responsibilities include managing patient flow, developing treatment plans, and independently seeing patients in the cardiology clinic.

RHSC in St.

Paul, MN is looking for exceptional, patient focused Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join our Cardiology APP team and make a difference for our patients and our community.

The Cardiology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is responsible for providing both inpatient and outpatient services.

In the inpatient setting, the APP works as a team with the attending cardiologist to perform and staff initial consults, subsequent follow up visits and to coordinate patient care.

In the outpatient setting, the APP will see patients independently in the cardiology clinic.

Outreach clinic may also be expected.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8 hr shifts or 10hr shifts for total of 40 hr per week.

Occasional weekends.

Required Qualifications: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program If a Physician Assistant: Current registration to practice as a Physician Assistant in Minnesota plus current national certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant & Approved by Minnesota Board of Medical Practice for prescription writing privileges (verified during credentialing process) If a Nurse Practitioner: Currently licensed as a APRN by the Minnesota Board of Nursing Currently licensed as a RN by the Minnesota Board of Nursing AANP certification Current BLS, ACLS, and DEA certification (verified during credentialing process

Position Summary

STATEMENT: The Cardiology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is responsible for providing both inpatient and outpatient services. In the outpatient setting, the APP will see patients independently in the cardiology clinic. Outreach clinic may also be expected. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Prioritizes consultations and rounding schedule according to established parameters.
  • Develops and reviews work plan for the day with rounding physician partner.
  • Communicates regularly with partner Inpatient APP to coordinate consult services and to balance workloads.
  • Assists in the assignment of residents and students as necessary.

2. Discusses and develops diagnosis and treatment plan with staff cardiologists. 20%

Assesses and completes H&P on new consults as selected/assigned.

Orders diagnostic testing as indicated.

Evaluates treatment for assigned patients and communicates information to physician partner.

Designs follow-up plan for patients to be seen in the clinic when discharged from the Hospital.

Documents assessment, treatment, evaluation and follow-up plan in the electronic medical record.

3. Discusses with and instructs patient/family members regarding treatment and follow-up 10%

Interacts with patients and family members to involve them in the plan of care. Educates patient/family members regarding diagnosis and treatment and documents this in the electronic medical record. Provides written instructions when indicated. Prescribes medications as indicated.

4. Evaluates interventions and plan of care regularly to ensure efficacy. 5%

Regularly reviews results of ordered diagnostics and communicates these to the partner cardiologist.

Reviews patients on the service at the end of the day with physician partner.

Modifies plan as indicated. Signs outpatients on service to APP partner when cross-covering.

5. Interacts with other healthcare professionals. 5%

Communicates hospital course and treatment plan to referring primary care physicians upon discharge.

6. Cardiology Clinic 45%

  • Evaluate and treat patient in the cardiology clinic on a regular basis.
  • Sees revisits independently and staffs new patients with the NIVL cardiologist.
  • Prescribes medications, orders tests and procedures as needed.
  • Documents clinic visits in the electronic medical record.
  • Regularly manages in-basket, following up on the results of testing and procedures ordered for clinic patients.

Communicates with other healthcare professionals regarding mutual patients.

Leadership responsibilities

The Cardiology APP has no formal leadership responsibilities.

Physical requirements

Work environment includes the inpatient nursing units and the clinic setting. Stands 4-6 hours and walks 2-4 hours daily while performing duties. May view a computer screen for up to 3 hours a day. May lift, push or pull equipment up to 50 lbs. Must be able to transport self throughout the hospital. Must be able to perform tasks requiring fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination.
