About the role

Assists in delivering orthopedic care by applying and maintaining casts, dressings, and traction devices. May also scrub into surgical procedures and prepare specialized orthopedic equipment and instruments.

General duties

Assists in the delivery of orthopedic care through application, removal, and maintenance of casts, dressings, traction, and other orthopedic devices. May instruct patients on cast care, crutch training, skin care, and hygiene, under the direction of the supervising physician. In addition, the orthopedic technician may scrub on orthopedic surgical procedures. The technician may have the responsibility for instrument preparation and assembly of orthopedic tables and equipment.

The orthopedic technician may NOT perform the following tasks

  • Prescribe medication
  • Admit or discharge patients
  • Interpret lab tests, x-rays, or diagnostic studies
  • Place pins for skeletal fracture
  • Set/manipulate bones
  • Suture or tie suture
  • Clamp or cut tissue

Requires graduation from a formal training program or equivalent documented experience and a current AHA BLS Certification. National Certification is preferred.
