Job Description

  • Position Summary and Purpose The Lab Assistant II position serves to support the Medical Technologist/Technician in duties that can be performed by non-certified staff to produce quality patient results. The assistant ensures the patient specimen is ready for testing and prepares all needed supplies, allowing the technologist/technician to utilize their highly specialized skill on the testing and review of results. Essential Functions: Under the direct supervision of a Medical Technologist, the lab assistant provides lab support and:
  • Properly prepares and identifies samples for laboratory testing
  • Performs instrument maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Documents maintenance performance of instruments/equipment
  • Performs and records Quality Control for testing performed in the area
  • Controls inventory ordering and supplies to maintain adequate stock
  • Accurately reports patient results in the Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Performs clerical duties needed for the department (includes accessing information in the EHR, filing reports/slides/specimens, answering phones, tracking specimens)
  • Retrieves and transports specimens to appropriate locations
  • Performs waived testing Other Functions:
  • Identifies and reports any safety hazards or concerns
  • Makes suggestions for improvements of policies and procedures
  • Performs teaching and training duties of position to other staff and potential employees
  • Develops and assists in writing training guides and standard work documents
  • Assists in setting up new Charge Description Master (CDM) numbers for testing
  • Creates manual charges for testing, when needed
  • Works to resolve ordering and billing issues
  • Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
  • Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
