About the role

Akicita Federal is hiring Phlebotomists to deliver essential laboratory and blood collection services for the VA Maine Healthcare System (Togus) in Augusta, ME. In this role, you will directly support the health and well-being of our nation's Veterans by ensuring accurate, timely specimen collection and processing across inpatient and outpatient settings. This is a full-time, on-site opportunity with a team dedicated to meeting the highest standards of patient-centered laboratory care.

Perform patient phlebotomy draws across inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, and the Emergency Department, including STAT, ASAP, and timed collections

Conduct inpatient ward rounds to complete scheduled and priority blood draws in a timely and professional manner

Process collected specimens and prepare send-out samples in accordance with established laboratory procedures

Positively identify patients prior to specimen collection and verify sample labeling before testing or aliquoting

Independently document and report patient test results and Quality Control (QC) data, resolving any collection, processing, or reporting discrepancies

Safeguard patient information in both electronic and paper formats in compliance with applicable privacy standards

Deliver professional, patient-centered service that upholds the quality standards set by the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI)

  • Demonstrated experience as a Phlebotomist or Medical Technician performing venipuncture and specimen collection in a clinical laboratory setting
  • Proficiency in inpatient and outpatient blood collection, including STAT and timed draws
  • Experience with specimen processing and preparation for send-out testing
  • Ability to independently identify, document, and resolve collection, processing, and reporting issues
  • Strong commitment to patient safety protocols, including positive patient identification procedures
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and safeguard protected health information in accordance with the Privacy Act \n

What sets candidates apart

  • Prior experience working in a Veterans Affairs (VA) or federal healthcare facility
  • Phlebotomy certification from a nationally recognized organization (e.g., NPA, ASCP, AMT, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines and quality control documentation
  • Experience working in high-volume or multi-area laboratory environments, including Emergency Department draws
  • Background in electronic health records or laboratory information systems used in large hospital settings
