Assists the surgical team during operative procedures by providing direct assistance to surgeons and APPs. Responsible for planning supplies, maintaining sterile fields, and ensuring the proper handling of surgical instruments.
Essential functions
Assists the surgical team during operative procedures as assigned by the APP or physician.
Provides direct assistance to the surgeon and/or APP by holding retractors, assisting with tissue manipulation, and performing basic tasks under supervision during surgeries.
Actively participates in the planning and set up of supplies needed for the procedure.
Assist in the proper handling, passing, and maintenance of surgical instruments, ensuring all equipment is sterile and in good working condition.
Assists the surgical team in maintaining patient safety through monitoring sterile techniques during draping as well as throughout the surgical procedure.
Maintains universal precautions in daily job duties.
Maintains confidentiality of all patients.
Attends and participates in staff meetings.
Education
High school diploma/GED required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Surgical Technologist certification preferred.
Surgical First Assistant certification required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
Experience
Minimum one-year experience in surgery or equivalent of education and experience. Experience in orthopedics is preferred.
Experience with computer software is required.
Knowledge
Knowledge of outpatient procedure room policies and procedures.
Knowledge of patient safety standards.
Knowledge of surgical equipment and supplies.
Knowledge of universal precautions and sterile techniques.
SKILLS
Skill in effective participation on a surgical team.
Skill in safety and infection control procedures by appropriately setting up a sterile procedure room and monitoring instrument use.
Skill in computer applications and EMR systems.
Abilities
