About the role

The Certified Surgical Technologist assists in the transportation of patients and provides surgical support by preparing instruments and maintaining a sterile environment. They are responsible for ensuring patient safety, managing supplies, and assisting the surgical team efficiently.

Job responsibilities

  • Assists in transportation of patients to and from the surgical services departments.
  • Performs as a first assistant when assigned within scope of practice, competency, and skills.
  • Reviews preference cards and makes proper selection of appropriate supplies and equipment for surgical procedures assigned.
  • Accountable for supplies, equipment, and environmental support in a cost-effective manner.
  • Drapes all equipment in a sterile fashion.
  • Identifies specimens for processing by circulating nurse.
  • Counts instruments, sharps, and sponges, before, during and after surgery.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization.
  • Removes soiled instruments and equipment appropriately.
  • Recognizes, intervenes, and reports situations which impede patient safety.
  • Safeguards the privacy of patients and maintains confidentially.
  • Maintains stock in Operating Room supply carts as needed.
  • Recognizes and reports problems related to kits, equipment, or supplies.
  • Contributes to cleanliness and order of the unit.
  • Facilitates efficient turnover time by prioritizing activities related to equipment and instrumentation needed for cases to follow in assigned room.
  • Ensures patient comfort and safety measures are maintained.
  • Assists the surgeon during surgical procedures with a high degree of efficiency, anticipating physician and patient needs during the case.
  • Assists in daily maintenance of the department, in completing work assignments, restocking, pulling cases for the next day and maintaining equipment in good working order.
  • Utilizes non-chargeable items in a cost-effective manner.
  • Orients and trains others on appropriate instruments/equipment use.
  • Follows all appropriate procedures to decontaminate, sterilize, and disinfect equipment and instruments.
  • Correctly assembles and wraps/packages items.
  • Prepares items in an organized and timely manner.
  • Operates the autoclave unit appropriately and performs high level disinfection processes.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Clearly communicates and continuously supports the Mission and Values of Johnson Memorial Health.
  • Conducts all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and Johnson Memorial Health policies and procedures including Blood and Body Substance Precautions.

Education, experience and training

Must be a graduate of an approved school of Surgical Technology or equivalent armed forces training. Must be certified or eligible for certification. Certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire date.

Johnson Memorial Health is a nationally-recognized network of physicians, services and healthcare resources based in Johnson County, Indiana. The centerpiece is Johnson Memorial Hospital, located in Franklin Indiana, just 20 minutes south of Indianapolis.

Monday - Friday, 8

00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. 80 hours per bi-weekly

Requirements

Candidates must be graduates of an approved school of Surgical Technology or have equivalent armed forces training. Certification is required within six months of hire, and candidates must be eligible for certification.
