Responsibilities

After surgery, may help transfer patients to the recovery room. Clean and restock the operating room. Serves as a resource to other staff members; precepts students and new employees. Assist in the preparation, care for, and disposal of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and helps apply dressings. Participates in committees and inter-disciplinary teams. Assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves. Before an operation, help to prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment. Adjust and check equipment to ensure it is working properly. Collaborates with Clinician to disseminate new knowledge. Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to surgeon according to established policies and procedures. Ensure clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and explosive hazards and aseptic technique. Prepare patients for surgery by wash, shave, and ensure aseptic incision sites. May transport patients to the operating room, help position them on the operating table, and cover them with sterile surgical drapes. During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants. Hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, sponge or suction the operative site and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.

Required

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery-Certified (TSC) Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification meeting American Heart Association (AHA) standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration components, within 30 days of hire Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Pennsylvania Surgical Technologist Requirements (Act 114/House Bill 81 –
  • Effective 12/27/2020):
  • Must meet one of the following: Graduate of a nationally recognized accredited Surgical Technology program and maintain certification Graduate of an appropriate military Surgical Technology training program Maintain certification from an accredited certification program Employed as a Surgical Technologist in a healthcare facility on or before 12/27/2020 Employed as a Surgical Technologist at another healthcare facility during the two years preceding 12/27/2020 New graduates may work up to six months following program completion but must obtain certification within six months of program completion. Grandfathered employees are not required to obtain certification.

  • Exception: A healthcare facility may employ individuals who do not meet certification requirements when: A diligent and thorough recruitment effort has been made; The facility is unable to employ a sufficient number of qualified Surgical Technologists who meet certification requirements; and Documentation of recruitment efforts is maintained. UPMC maintains documentation of recruitment efforts and recognizes that the supply of certified or certification-eligible Surgical Technologists may not meet organizational needs.

  • Education: Certified Surgical Technologists must comply with continuing education requirements established by their credentialing organization. Non-certified Surgical Technologists must complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years. New York Surgical Technologist Requirements (Public Health Law §2824): A healthcare facility may employ an individual who does not meet qualification requirements when: A diligent and thorough recruitment effort has been made; Documentation of recruitment efforts is maintained; and The individual meets qualification requirements within two years of employment.

Licensure

Current licensure in the state where the facility is located, or a multistate license issued under the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), when applicable. Employees working under an out-of-state NLC license who establish residency in the state where the facility is located must apply for licensure in that state within 60 days of the residency change. Requirements

Requires CST or TSC certification and BLS/CPR certification. Must meet Pennsylvania or New York state surgical technologist qualification requirements and pass a criminal background check.
