About the role

The Pre-Operative nurse provides direct patient care including assessment, planning, and implementation of nursing processes. Key duties include reviewing medical records, administering pre-op medications, and assisting anesthesiologists with nerve blocks.

SUMMARY

The Pre-Operative nurse provides direct patient care and utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation according to policies and procedures of the facility. Understands safety hazards and use of equipment to prevent damage or harm to personnel and patients and functions in assigned areas as directed.

Essential duties and responsibilities

Reviews medical record for completeness of operative consent surgical orders, H&P, and diagnostic studies. Ensures medical records are in compliance with policy.

Greets, identifies, and admits patients in Pre-op holding area according to admitting routine.

Provide physiological comfort and psychological support based on individual patient needs.

Perform appropriate diagnostic tests, i.e. Hgb, blood glucose, urine pregnancy test, EKG. Starts IV therapy and administers pre-operation medication, if applicable.

Assists anesthesiologist with pre-operative nerve block.

Assures all necessary supplies and emergency equipment is available and operational.

Appropriately handles the disposal of biohazardous materials.

Understands and performs proper technique of equipment in assigned work area.

Adheres to POSC procedures, policies, and standards.

Maintains area of Special Assignments.

Responsible for training new employees.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required.
  • Previous Pre-Operative experience preferred.
  • Strong teamwork, customer service, dependability, organizational, and technical skills.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from patients, representatives, and physicians; ability to read and interpret diagnostic studies and medical records.
  • Ability to read and interpret policies, procedures, and Instructions for Use (IFUs). Ability to communicate in a second language is a plus.
  • Ability to calculate figures such as weight, height, and medication dosing.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written/oral instructions and manage variables such as equipment and schedule changes.
  • Computer proficiency required (MS Word/Outlook; Advantix required; Athena preferred).
  • ACLS and BLS certification required. If not ACLS certified at hire, must obtain within three (3) months of hire.
  • Participation in preparation activities for State and AAAHC surveys as required.

Supervisory responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  • American Heart Association BLS Certification — required.
  • ACLS Certification — required (or obtain within three (3) months of hire).

Physical demands & work environment

The physical demands and work environment described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk, and hear and maybe on their feet much of the day, including pushing/pulling patients on stretchers and in wheelchairs.

These duties can be stressful, as can dealing with injured people.

There is potential exposure to anesthetic gases, hazardous chemicals, blood and body fluids, sharps, and cleaning solutions.

The employee frequently is required to move all extremities within full range of motion and to stoop and bend at 90 degrees.

Close vision is required.

Workdays are Monday through Friday; long hours may be required.

Noise level is usually moderate.

Requirements

Candidates must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a Georgia State Board of Nursing Licensure (RN). BLS and ACLS certifications are required, along with proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, and medical software like Advantix.
