About the role

The dentist provides quality dental care across community and mobile outreach sites, diagnosing oral conditions and prescribing treatments. They also lead dental assistants and hygienists while educating patients and guardians on oral health prevention.

Description The dentist will provide quality dental care in a variety of community outreach and mobile outreach sites as well as sites throughout the UCHC service area. The dentist will be under the supervision of the Chief Executive Officer. Must love working with children.

Requirements

  • Essential Functions 1.
  • Examines individuals requesting dental care, diagnoses their dental/oral conditions, prescribes and carries out, or directs others in carrying out, appropriate dental/oral treatment, or refers Patients for specialty consultation or treatment in conformance with approved clinical protocols.
  • 2.
  • Records patient-dentist transactions as they occur in the patient’s dental record so that the dental record accurately and completely reflects the nature of the contact, the condition of the patient and the care or treatment provided.
  • In addition the Dentist shall complete referrals, data collections instruments and other records or paper work, as shall be required from time to time by UCHC.
  • 3.
  • Educates patients and parents/guardians as to the nature of oral health related conditions and in the general promotion oral health related disease prevention.
  • 4.
  • Clinically directs and provides leadership for the dental hygienist(s) and dental assistants in the process of providing dental care and treatment to patients.
  • 5.
  • Serves on the UCHC or dental committees as requested by the Dental Director.
  • 6.
  • Assists in the provision of technical assistance and health education to the community as requested.
  • 7.
  • Provides consultation to UCHC regarding dental and oral health care issues.
  • 8.
  • Participates in peer review with other dentists.
  • 9.
  • Performs all tasks in compliance with Dental Policies and Procedures and UCHC policies and procedures.
  • Additional Duties & Responsibilities 1.
  • Participates in recruitment/retention activities of the Dental department as requested.
  • 2.
  • Participates in community Health Fairs as requested.
  • Qualifications/Requirements 1.
  • Graduation from an accredited dental school 2.
  • Pediatric experience preferred.
  • 3.
  • Clinically fluent in Spanish preferred.
  • 4.
  • Knowledge of public health principles and practices preferred.
  • 5.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills preferred.
  • 6.
  • Excellent ability to educate, explain, and calm pediatric patients.
  • 7.
  • Ability to maintain clinical privileges required.
  • 8.
  • No physical or mental problems that would interfere with ability to provide dental treatment 9.
  • Eligible for FTCA coverage or private professional malpractice insurance.
  • 10.
  • Reliable vehicle for transportation to and from site.
  • Licensure/Certification 1.
  • Unrestricted license to practice dentistry in the State of Arizona. (Not applicable to commissioned NHSC/PHS officers) 2.
  • Current CPR (BLS) certification.
  • 3.
  • DEA registrations 4.
  • Credentialed with AHCCCS and other dental insurance accepted by UCHC.
  • 5.
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license
