About the role

Provides direct patient care and performs clerical duties for the oncology nursing unit. Responsibilities include maintaining patient records, transporting patients, and coordinating communication between medical staff and families.

Job Summary

Provides direct care as assigned. Performs clerical duties for nursing unit(s) as assigned. May require access to storage areas where medications are kept and carry out procedures that require the use of non-prescription medications.

Essential Functions

Performs responsibilities accurately, timely, and safely for assigned patients/area.

Communicates and informs appropriate personnel, patients and family members of pertinent information in a timely manner.

Maintains accurate paper and electronic documentation.

Utilizes equipment and supplies safely and appropriately; orders supplies as needed; labels specimens correctly.

Performs basic nursing care, simple and complex procedures, multiple treatments, waived testing and transports assigned patients.

Maintains the order of the patient record; enters patient car orders into the computer system; thins and organizes the patient care record in accordance with the standards of care identified by the nursing unit; facilitates communication among patients, nursing, physicians, ancillary departments, and guests; orders and stores supplies for the nursing unit.

Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Supervisory/Management Responsibility
  • This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.

Minimum Requirements

Education - High school diploma, GED or equivalent preferred.

Experience - One (1) year nurse tech hospital experience or skilled nursing facility is required if the candidate does not meet all of the educational requirements. Computer experience required. CNA or CMA or related experience is preferred. Two (2) years NT/NA experience preferred. US one (1) year Hospital clerical experience preferred. Candidates must successfully complete Palmetto Health unit secretary course and training within 90 days of hire. Candidates without the preferred experience are eligible for hire if they meet all of the educational requirements.

In Lieu Of

In lieu of school verification of a nursing assistant training course, may accept current or former state CN A certification as proof of completed state required training at time of hire.

In lieu of school verification of a medical assistant training course, may accept current or former CMA certification as proof of completed required training at time of hire.

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

Heart saver training

Successful completion of tech training course as evidenced by Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) course or nursing fundamentals from accredited organization

Successful completion of an EKG course for portable EKG and successful completion of a phlebotomy course from an accredited organization preferred. Medical Assistant Training acceptable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Skills necessary to care for patients.
