The Patient Sitter is responsible for the continuous observation of patients to ensure their safety and dignity. They must report behavioral changes to the Registered Nurse and implement redirection or diversional activities as needed.

A day in the life of a Patient Sitter at Hackensack Meridian Health includes: Provides verbal hand off to nurse and oncoming personnel. Completes handoff tool. Reports all observations to the Registered Nurse. Ensures patient safety by providing an organized and safe environment. Observe patient's environment for risks and hazards. Takes necessary steps to reduce the risk and provides report to the registered nurse. Assures patient's privacy and dignity. Observe patient's status for changes in behavior such as quiet, eyes closed, cooperative, agitated, loud or noisy, verbally abusive, combative, confused, talking to provider and visitors, walking, pacing, angry, hostile, talking to self, sexually inappropriate. Applies appropriate interventions: Observe, redirect, diversional activities, notify RN. Other duties and/or projects as assigned. Adheres to HMH's Organizational and Managerial competencies and standards of behavior. Lifts a minimum of 5 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 5 lbs. and stands a minimum of 1 hours a day
