About the role

Perform non-licensed patient care tasks such as vital signs, EKGs, and specimen collection under nurse supervision. Handle clerical duties, act as the unit receptionist, and manage the utilization of unit supplies.

Overview The Emergency Department Tech performs patient care needs and task where a license is not required, as directed by the nurse.

This may include, but not limited to, assisting with toileting, specimen collection, vital signs, patient transport, cardiac monitor application, EKG’s and finger stick glucose after appropriate training.

The ED Tech also may perform clerical, secretarial duties related to the assigned unit under the direction of the unit director.

He/she acts as the unit’s receptionist, answers patient and visitor inquirers within the scope of practice.

In addition, the unit secretary will order and monitor utilization of selected supplies: office, nutritional supplements, and forms.

Responsibilities

Observe professional ethics in maintaining confidential information acquired regarding personal, financial, medical or employment of patients, families, and employees of DRMC. Must follow and enforce accepted safety practices for patients and DRMC. Must report hazards and initiate appropriate action. Must participate in safety instructional programs. Qualifications

Education: Ability to read and write and exhibit proficiency in patient care and oral communication skills.

Experience

  • Desirable characteristics include at least one year of experience as a Tech, preferably in the area of application. Must be able to follow directions and perform work according to department standards under the supervision of an RN. Must be emotionally mature and able to function effectively under stress.

It was also awarded the 2023 Get with the Guidelines Rural Stroke Bronze Quality Award from the American Heart Association. In fall of 2023, DeKalb Regional was one of seven hospitals in Alabama to receive an “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group. DeKalb Regional Medical Center has 500 employees and more than 100 members of the medical staff.

Requirements

Requires proficiency in patient care, oral communication, and the ability to read and write. CPR certification is required, and at least one year of experience as a Tech is desirable.
