Practice for this role

About the role

The fellow will use X-ray crystallography to support structure-guided drug design and lead recombinant protein expression and purification. They will also conduct quantitative biophysical and biochemical binding studies within a multidisciplinary drug discovery program.

Join the forefront of groundbreaking research at City of Hope, where we are changing lives and making a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening illnesses.

Our dedicated and compassionate faculty and staff are united by a shared mission: to contribute to innovative approaches that predict, prevent, and cure disease while helping shape the future of medicine through cutting-edge research.

The Dr.

Jeff Perry laboratory in the Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join a multidisciplinary drug discovery program focused on a redox-sensitive regulatory protein at the intersection of cellular stress responses, inflammation, and metabolic disease, including diabetes.

This project aims to develop first-in-class small-molecule modulators of a protein that links oxidative stress to inflammatory signaling pathways, with strong therapeutic potential in metabolic and inflammatory disorders.

As a successful candidate, you will: Use X-ray crystallography to support structure-guided drug design, lead recombinant protein expression and purification, and conduct quantitative biophysical and biochemical binding studies, such as SPR, ITC, and DSF.

Collaborate in a highly integrated research environment that brings together structural biology, chemical biology, and translational science.

Your qualifications should include

  • Ph.D. in life sciences, biomedical sciences, structural biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline is required. Prior experience in protein biochemistry and X-ray crystallography is essential. Familiarity with redox biology, inflammatory signaling, or fragment-based discovery approaches is advantageous. Demonstrated record of successful research projects and publications. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Market context

California structural biology roles stay competitive

In California, postdoctoral roles in structural biology and drug discovery are typically driven by active research programs in universities, biotech, and translational labs. These positions are competitive because employers often look for a Ph.D., hands-on protein biochemistry and X-ray crystallography experience, and a publication record.
