About the role

Summary of Position

Promote dental health by completing dental prophylaxis, providing oral cancer screening and radiographic studies, charting conditions of decay and disease, performing procedures in compliance with the dental practice act.

Population Served

Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center will provide open access, community-oriented primary care of the highest quality to all residents within our service area and surrounding counties, regardless of their ability to pay.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions in the English language.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Interact in a respectful and professional manner with internal and external custons or related charges.
  • Able to travel to other RCCHC site.
  • Understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse populations, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds to the communities we serve.

Education: Associate degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited Dental Hygiene program

Experience

Two (2) years’ experience preferred but not required. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Certification(s)/Licensure

North Carolina Dental Hygiene License

Current CPR (BLS) required.

Current and unencumbered license to practice dental hygiene in the State of North Carolina.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of clinical dental hygiene
  • Thorough knowledge of dental terminology and dental science
  • Knowledge of community-based dental environment
  • Knowledge of medications related to dentistry
  • Familiarity with dental anatomy and pathology to the extent of being able to recognize simple types of oral conditions
  • Essential Functions
  • Supports the Mission, Value and Vision of Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center.
  • Is accountable to ensure patient rights and ensures an environment that promotes the privacy, dignity, and well-being of all patients in a safe, secure environment.
  • Supports, cooperates with, and implements specific procedures and programs for: 1. Safety, including universal precautions and safe work practices, established fire/safety/disaster plans, risk management, and security, reports and/or corrects unsafe working conditions, equipment repair and maintenance needs. 2. Confidentiality of all data, including patient, employee, and operations data. 3. Quality Improvement and compliance with all regulatory requirements. 4. Compliance with current law and policy to prove a work environment free from sexual harassment and all illegal and discriminatory behavior.
  • Supports and participates in common teamwork: 1. Cooperates and works together with all care team members, plans, and completes job duties with minimal supervisory direction, including appropriate judgement. 2. Remain calm and poised in urgent or stressful situations. 3. Follows up as appropriate with supervisor, care team members or patients regarding reported complaints, problems, and concerns 4. Promotes positive public relations with patients, visitors, and the community 5. Completes requirements for in-service training, acceptable attendance, uniform, and dress codes including personal hygiene. 6. Ability to work with persons from a wide diversity of social, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. 7. Effectively and efficiently completes all duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for knowing and following all dental policies and procedures, including documenting all patient interactions in EHR timely.
  • Provide prophylactic care and preventative care to include topical fluoride varnish and application of occlusal sealants.
  • Provide oral hygiene education to patients, on an individual basis and in groups when feasible and appropriate.
  • Exposes and develops radiographs.
  • Develops education programs with the Chief Dental Officer/Dental Director
  • Percepts dental hygiene students assigned to Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center or in conjunction with dental outreach programs.
  • Participates in continuing education on and off site as feasible and appropriate.
  • Perform sterilization of dental instruments and dental equipment.
  • May be required to work multiple locations.
  • Strict adherence to all Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center, HIPAA, HRSA, State, Federal and accreditation agency rules, and regulations.

Requirements

Requires an Associate degree in Dental Hygiene and a valid North Carolina Dental Hygiene License along with current CPR certification. Two years of experience and bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish are preferred.
