About the role

The Senior Phlebotomist is responsible for the accurate collection of blood and non-blood samples from patients of all age groups. They also process specimens for analysis and support the training of other phlebotomy staff.

**NOTE - This position is at our Tanglewood Family Medicine location, in Bracey, VA

**MUST have professional pediatric phlebotomy experience to qualify for this role.

**MUST have 3+ years of experience to qualify for this role.

The Phlebotomist Senior assure proper collection of blood and non-blood samples by, venipuncture and capillary puncture as applicable from outpatients and or inpatients in all age groups as requested physicians.

The Phlebotomist Senior also prepares specimens for analysis by processing orders via HIS/LIS computers, verifying specimen acceptability and performing established pre-analytical procedures in accordance with laboratory policy in an accurate, safe, and timely manner.

The Phlebotomist Senior may be responsible for performing Point of Care Testing.

Phlebotomist Senior supports the teaching and training of others in phlebotomy functions.

Essential Job Statements

Verifies patient identification in accordance with VCU Health System Policy.

Independently perform phlebotomy collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups (neonates to geriatrics). Collects non-blood specimens such as urines, stools, and sputum for testing

Process specimens according to standard operating procedures.

Perform data entry of test orders into the computer system

Provide excellent customer service to all internal and external customers.

Administer oral solutions according to laboratory testing procedures.

Performs monthly inventory and stock supplies daily as needed.

Perform CLIA-waived testing based on work locations.

Will be required to take call after hours and weekends on a scheduled basis based on primary site requirements.

Able to work independently in high volume locations with little to no supervision while maintaining adequate patient workflow.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications

Required Education: High School diploma or equivalent

Preferred Education: Completion of a phlebotomy, or medical assistant training program

Licensing/ Certification

Licensure/Certification Required: N/A

Licensure/Certification Preferred: Certification as a Phlebotomist from ASCP or other recognized certification agency

Minimum Qualifications

Greater than 3 years of Phlebotomy experience May require weekend and/or holiday rotation based on primary site requirements

Pediatric phlebotomy experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Preferred:

Basic experience in specimen collection techniques (venipuncture, capillary collection, urine collection), Preferred. One year of experience in laboratory clerical and computer entry functions, Preferred.

Working Conditions

Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. General office environment. May be exposed to physical altercations and verbal abuse. May be required to use physical restraints.

May be exposed to adverse weather conditions; cold, hot, dust, wind, etc. Required to car travel to off-site locations, occasionally in adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights.

May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids.

May be exposed to human blood and other potentially infectious materials.

May have periods of constant interruptions. Prolonged periods of working alone.

Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
