About the role

The Registered Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care in the operating room, serving as a scrub, circulating, or supervising nurse. Key duties include maintaining sterile environments, managing surgical supplies, and ensuring patient safety throughout the perioperative process.

Job Summary

Responsible for providing nursing care to patients in the operating room. This may include, but is not limited to, performing as a scrub nurse, circulating nurse, supervisor, and educator.

Duties and Responsibilities

Supervises and directs patient care in the operating room. Ensures that proper techniques and practices are used according to accepted standards of practice. Supervises other personnel in the room and directs or assists, as necessary. Ensures care is provided to the appropriate patient through proper identification and chart review. Performs scrub duties, as necessary, if within scope of practice. Maintains count of sponges, needles, and instruments to ensure no loss of items. Performs all circulation duties with efficiency and speed. Supervises and assists the scrub person as necessary. Positions the patient, prepares the operative area, and adjusts the table to the proper position. Ensures all supplies and equipment are in the room and provided to the team, as necessary. Opens all sterile packs and supplies according to aseptic technique. Assists surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other personnel as needed. Reviews surgeon’s preference cards and verifies with the surgeon, as necessary. Ensures all medications are administered and charted according to established policies and procedures. Cares for specimens and cultures as directed by set policies and procedures. Maintains OR records, specimens, implants, and reports any unusual occurrences. Accompanies the patient to the Recovery Room and reports to the Recovery Room nurse on the patient’s status. Assists with control and maintenance of supplies and equipment, including stocking the ORs before the end of a shift and putting deliveries away. Assists in supervision of personnel to provide optimum assurance of a safe environment. Checks rooms, materials, and equipment for proper care and handling. Ensures a clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety. Assists in control of traffic and personnel to ensure proper control of infection and asepsis. Assists in operating room staff development and education. Assists in formulation and interpretation of procedures, standards, and techniques. Assists in orientation of new personnel. Assists in evaluation of all operating room activities, nursing care provided, personnel, and techniques. Performs functions of registered nurse-recovery room and preoperative nurse, as assigned. Ensures the center is tidy and that all deliveries and boxes are put away in all areas of the center. Education and Experience: Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the state of Maryland. Prior experience in perioperative nursing. CPR certification. Mental/Physical Requirements: The Registered Nurse must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. This role requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout the clinical environment for extended periods. The employee must be able to position and assist patients, transport equipment and supplies, and occasionally lift, push, pull, or move up to 50 pounds.

The position requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate medical equipment, administer medications, perform clinical procedures, document in electronic medical records, and utilize standard office and communication equipment.

The employee must be able to assess, interpret, and respond appropriately to patient care needs; maintain attention to detail; exercise sound clinical judgment; and effectively prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced surgical environment. The ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations, maintain composure under pressure, and communicate effectively with patients, physicians, staff, and external partners is essential.

Requirements

Candidates must hold a current Registered Professional Nurse license in the state of Maryland and possess CPR certification. Prior experience in perioperative nursing is required, along with the physical ability to handle equipment and assist patients.
