Under the joint supervision of the on-site Director and the Medical Director the Nurse is responsible for the health concerns of the clients (offenders) served at that location. The Nurse shall operate in accordance with the agency's policies and procedures as determined by the Board of Directors and as implemented by his/her supervisors. The Nurse shall abide by those laws related to his/her nursing license and should follow commonly accepted nursing practice (procedures) when treating Mirror clientele. The Nurse shall also ensure conformance to Medicaid and ADAS standards and assist the agency in meeting its contractual agreements with SRS, Medicaid, BOP and KDOC. Duties include medical policy development, health assessment of residents, medication administration, educational presentations, referral of clients to community-based agencies and all related paperwork demands.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • 1. Evaluate the particular nursing needs of each resident and provide the care and treatment that is indicated by the plan of care approved by the program's Medical Director. 2. Supervise and maintain all medical records and resident medication charting via our EMR as required. 3. Act as the agency's liaison with the local medical community. Work to schedule necessary resident medical and mental health appointments. 4. Provide group presentations on a health related topic such as AIDS, nutrition and ATOD, sexually transmitted diseases, stress management, etc... as directed by your supervisor, and instruct residents on physical fitness and cardiovascular exercise. 5. Provide education and training for staff in HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases. 6. Monitor client medications. 7. Maintain communication and a positive working relationship with local pharmacies, health/mental health providers so Mirror residents may continue to receive the benefits of their services. 8. Dialogue with local community based medical providers and the agency's Medical Director in order to keep them apprised of the medical condition(s) of those residents who are acutely ill. 9. Provide individual counseling for the residents and assist them in the identification and resolution of their medical problems, negative behaviors (that affect their health conditions), or inappropriate cognition, which prevent them from reaching their optimum state of health. 10. Maintain resident related paperwork such as health assessments, tuberculosis testing, medication charts, blood pressure records and any other paperwork related to the physical well being of the agency's residents. 11. On an as needed basis provide and document tuberculosis testing for Mirror staff assigned to the appropriate facilities. 12. Initiate referrals for dual-diagnosed offenders to local mental health providers, as directed by your supervisors. 13. Update agency policy as it relates to medical well being of residents and those issues which impact the medical concerns of the agency. These would include the Medical Director's standing orders, the AIDS policy statement, the Infection Control Policy Statement, the Tuberculosis Policy Statement, et.al. 14. Ensure compliance with Medicaid contractual obligations in regard to the resident's health care needs. 15. Attend and participate in all staff meetings as required by site Director. 16. Assist the site Director on coverage related issues when necessary. 17. Available on-call for medical questions. 18. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned by the site Director, the Medical Director or the President/CEO. Qualifications1. Graduate of an accredited vocational, technical, community college or four-year college or university in nursing. Licensed Practical (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is acceptable for most positions. LPNs with experience will be considered along with RN and BSNs (licensed as RNs) with or without experience. 2. Be licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse or be a Licensed BSN (with RN license) in the State of Kansas.
  • 3. Excellent interpersonal skills required as well as ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 4. Capable of maintaining a team spirit. Ability to work cooperatively with others. 5. Must be adaptable to change and have effective organizational skills. 6. Must be able to organize and follow through on multiple tasks. 7. Display consistent, good judgment and decision-making skills. 8. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with the resistive, chemically dependent client. 9. Knowledge of the criminal mindset and persons with anti-social, et.al., personality disorder(s) would be helpful. 10. Knowledge in the disease of addiction and the various modes of treatment is also desirable. 11. Must be able to pass KBI (et.al.) security check. 12. Every employee must be free of chemical dependency for at least 2 years prior to employment. 13. Knowledge of the dual-diagnosed client would also be a plus. 14. Available on-call for medical questions. 15. Must be proficient in computer skills or experience or skills with an Electronic Health Record. 16. Physical requirements would include but not limited to: standing, walking, talking, hearing and lifting (40/50 pounds). Walking stairs may be required as well. Be able to operate a motor vehicle (Class C license). *Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) may be used if properly trained in TB testing in order to meet the agency's TB testing requirements.

Requirements

Candidates must be a licensed LPN, RN, or BSN in the state of Kansas with a degree from an accredited nursing program. Additional requirements include the ability to pass a security check and being free of chemical dependency for at least two years.
