About the role

The RN provides direct and indirect patient care in the Emergency Department, including rapid assessments using the ESI triage process. They are responsible for implementing care plans, administering treatments, and maintaining accurate medical records in a fast-paced environment.

Description JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department (ED) is responsible for providing direct and indirect patient care services, within the scope of practice, under the supervision and direction of the Manager. This position demands a professional who thrives in fast-paced environments, excels in critical thinking, and is committed to exceptional patient care in emergent situations. Our ED RNs plays a pivotal role is assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care for patients of all ages presenting with a wide range of conditions. The RN must adhere to the hospital’s policies and procedures, maintain accurate patient records, and ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and their families.

Competencies

Conduct rapid, comprehensive assessments of patients presenting to the ED using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) triage process to determine acuity, prioritize care needs, and facilitate timely interventions. Initiate appropriate interventions and provide nursing care based on clinical judgments and standards of care. Administer medications, treatments, and perform nursing procedures safely and competently according to physician orders and hospital policies. Assist physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ensuring adherence to clinical protocols, patient safety standards, and scope of practice. Monitor patient responses to treatments and adjust nursing care plans as necessary. Provide emotional support and education to patients and their families about conditions, treatment plans, and preventive measures. Ensure accurate documentation of patient care, interventions, and evaluations in the electronic medical record. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and professional development. Adhere to all hospital policies, nursing standards, and regulatory requirements to maintain a safe and effective care environment. Assist in the development and implementation of ED policies and procedures to improve patient care and workflow efficiency. Maintain professional competence and support ongoing development through participation in approved educational programs, in-service training, workshops, and review of current professional literature. Provide orientation, support, and guidance to new employees, nursing assistants, and other staff to ensure effective integration, teamwork, and adherence to ED policies and procedures. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing and maintain current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Missouri or hold a compact license. Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications; TNCC and ESI certification are required and may be obtained within the first year of employment. Complete annual CareLearning and other assigned compliance courses to maintain required competencies and adhere to hospital policies and regulatory standards. Previous experience in the Emergency Department (ED) setting is preferred. Apply exceptional clinical and critical thinking skills to manage high-stress situations calmly and effectively. Exhibit excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team. Work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Demonstrate a commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered care. Display a willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies, protocols, and best practices.
