The Certified Surgical Technician is responsible for creating and maintaining the sterile field and anticipating the surgeon's needs during intraoperative procedures. They collaborate with the perioperative team to provide safe, compassionate care and support decontamination and sterile supply areas.

The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) (TS-C) works closely with all perioperative team members during the preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative care of the surgical patient.
The Certified Surgical Technician also supports decontamination and sterile supply area, and maintains courteous and professional interactions with the patients and staff.
The Certified Surgical Technician will also be required to precept.

Job Duties
Recognizes the patients, their family/designated care partner(s) in providing safe, compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient's personal preferences, priorities, needs, and cultural beliefs and values. Communicates with and supports the interprofessional team, patient, family and designated care partners.
Inspects Operating Room (OR) for cleanliness and secures, sets up, and prepares OR equipment, instruments and supplies which are required for surgical procedures. Participates in team time out and is an active participant and advocate for patient safety and high quality care in the perioperative setting.
Provides assistance with gowning and gloving of Surgical team including the Surgeon. Assist with preparation of the sterile field including draping of the patient and maintaining sterile field integrity. Gives a thorough report to relief personnel on status of procedure, instruments, materials, and any other pertinent information to insure a smooth transition of personnel during the surgical procedure.
Counts all sharps, sponges and instruments with the circulating nurse prior to, during and after the surgical procedure. Follows the policy on how counts are performed, and initiates corrective action when count is incorrect. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
Provides assistance in maintaining supplies and equipment available to ensure efficient unit operations. Helps maintain a safe, neat and clean environment to facilitate safe and effective patient care in the Operating Room. Acts as primary preceptor to other surgical team members as needed
Additional Qualifications Physical Demands Lift and carry 40-50 lbs.
Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.

Candidates must have a high school diploma, be a graduate of a surgical technician training program, and hold CST or TS-C certification. BLS certification from the American Heart Association is also required.
