Position Title: Histotechnician (Histotech)

Location: Frisco, TX

Schedule: Full-Time | Monday–Friday

Hours

Flexible and based on laboratory workload and operational needs. Daily schedule may vary depending on specimen volume, turnaround time requirements, and business needs.

Position Summary

Bare Dermatology is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Histotechnician to join our in-house pathology laboratory in Frisco, Texas. The Histotechnician is responsible for processing dermatopathology specimens from receipt through slide preparation, ensuring the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and turnaround time. This position plays a vital role in supporting patient care by preparing high-quality tissue sections for microscopic interpretation by the dermatopathologist.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Receive, accession, and verify pathology specimens.

Perform gross specimen handling within the scope of training and laboratory protocols.

Process tissue specimens using automated tissue processors.

Embed tissue specimens in paraffin.

Perform microtomy to obtain high-quality tissue sections.

Prepare and stain slides using routine Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining procedures.

Perform special stains assigned and validated by the laboratory.

Coverslip, label, and prepare slides for pathologist review.

Maintain accurate documentation and laboratory records in accordance with CLIA and regulatory requirements.

Perform routine quality control and quality assurance procedures.

Maintain laboratory equipment, perform routine maintenance, and report equipment issues as needed.

Monitor reagent inventory and notify leadership when supplies require replenishment.

Follow all laboratory safety procedures, including OSHA and infection control standards.

Participate in competency assessments, continuing education, and laboratory inspections.

Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.

Assist with additional laboratory duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree (or higher) in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, or another related science field.
  • Completion of an accredited Histotechnology training program.
  • Knowledge of histology laboratory procedures, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and routine H&E staining.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology.
  • Previous experience in a histology or dermatopathology laboratory.
  • Experience performing special stains and maintaining CLIA compliance.
  • Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand movements associated with embedding and microtomy.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity required for handling delicate tissue specimens and laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to work safely with laboratory chemicals, including formalin, alcohols, xylene, and staining reagents, while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.

Work Environment

This position works in a CLIA-certified histology laboratory and requires adherence to all laboratory safety, quality assurance, and regulatory standards. The Histotechnician must maintain a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory environment while ensuring timely processing of patient specimens.

Requirements

Requires an associate degree or higher in a science field and completion of an accredited Histotechnology training program. Certification through the ASCP and previous experience in a dermatopathology laboratory are preferred.
