About the role

Perform technical diagnostic ultrasound and non-invasive vascular procedures across various high-stress clinical environments. Ensure patient safety, maintain sterile techniques, and provide accurate anatomical data for radiologist interpretation.

Under general supervision to perform technical procedures providing pertinent anatomical and functional Ultrasound data for the Radiologists interpretation.

Core Competencies Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures as outlined in the Department Policy and Procedure Manual.

Performs portable procedures in high stress environments includes Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery, Labor Room, Intensive Care Units, Surgery Suite and Emergency Room.

Performs non-invasive vascular exams as outlined in the Ultrasound department policy and procedure manual.

Evaluates patient’s medical history and clinical data.

Establishes quality control processes to make sure patient information on images are accurate.

Completes all paper work accurately.

Demonstrates knowledge of clinical norms for all age groups as applicable to job functions.

Performs all clinical and diagnostic procedures for geriatric, adult, adolescent and pediatric patients according to department policy and procedure.

Provides patient and family with information/instructions regarding procedure, evaluating barriers to understanding.

Ensures patient safety and confidentiality while performing exam.

Assists physicians utilizing ultrasound in the performance of special procedures involving aspirations, biopsies and for guidance of needle placement procedures.

Follows universal Protocol by using two patient identifiers prior to performing the exam, using pre-op/pre procedure verification check list, and using “Time Out”.

Maintains proper sterile techniques for procedures; regularly practices aseptic techniques and strictly obeys isolation and infection control procedures; prevents cross contamination during procedures.

Follows cleaning and high level disinfection of semi-critical devices, policy and procedures.

Adheres to infection prevention guidelines: uses good hand washing technique, adheres to isolation policy, cleans equipment between patients, helps keep patient rooms and units clean, follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies, setting-up and doing procedures, disposes of infectious waste properly.

Maintains appropriate quantities of medical stock for the department.

Utilizes Hospital Information System (HIS), Radiology Information System (RIS) and PACS.

Assists student technologists who may rotate through the department.

Completes all assigned procedures in a timely manner and uses time between procedures to department advantage assisting others, clerical duties, stocking, transporting, etc Maintains a safe working environment: Keeps work area clean and free of hazards.

Alerts appropriate resource of faulty or broken equipment.

Observes all safety guidelines.

Recognizes and reports unsafe acts Transports and moves patients using appropriate body mechanics and safety precautions.

Demonstrates knowledge and practice of safe patient handling devices.

Meets safety needs of patient , uses equipment safely and properly (O2, Hoyer lift, electric beds).

Uses ALARA and safety principle at all times.

Understands his/her role in maintaining medication security to authorized personnel only.

Answers telephone inquiries of a technical nature from physicians, patients and hospital personnel.

Assumes responsibility and accountability for own professional growth and practice including maintaining current licensure and completing educational requirements.
