About the role

The Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist in preparing and delivering medications, managing Pyxis MedStations, and handling patient-owned medications. They are also responsible for inventory control, drug recalls, and maintaining a clean, organized pharmacy environment.

Job Duties of Technicians

  • 1.
  • Assist the Pharmacist.
  • 2.
  • Answer Telephones in a polite, courteous, and professional manner, directing inquiries or requests appropriately, relaying messages accurately and efficiently.
  • 3.
  • Make rounds to nursing unit Pyxis MedStations to deliver medication.
  • 4.
  • Prepare individual medication doses accurately for verification by the pharmacist.
  • 5.
  • Retrieve, review and replenish supplies of medications in the Emergency Supply boxes, preparing them to be checked for accuracy by the pharmacist prior to delivery, including the Nursing Office.

6. Retrieve patients’ own meds from the Nursing office on a daily basis.

  • Label, record and designate patients’ own meds.
  • 2.
  • Provide patients’ own meds bags to nurse prior to discharge.
  • 3.
  • Alert the director of pharmacy of any patients’ own meds not properly safeguarded and labeled by nursing staff.
  • 4.
  • Maintenance of “Patient’s Own Medications” for return to patient/family.
  • 5.
  • Record and check on the list any patients’ own meds, for each discharge.

7. Accurately maintain Pyxis MedStations

1. refill lists. 2. load medications. 3. unload medications. 4. accurately record expiration dates and quantities loaded, refilled. 5. efficiently correct “drawer failures” 6. notify Pyxis help desk, show evidence of knowledge of process.

8. Inventory Management

1. Check in all orders received from both the primary wholesaler and secondary vendors. 2. Rotate stock. 3. Remove any medications that will expire within two months, in both the pharmacy department and all areas in the hospital where medications are stored. 4. Maintain a Log of all deliveries.

9. Drug Recalls

1.

Check all inventory, including pyxis machines for recalled lot #’s.

2.

Notify the Director of Pharmacy of the findings.

3.

Document, package and mail to wholesaler/manufacturer any recalled drugs as per instructions provided with recall notice.

4.

Every day, log onto the Cardinal Wholesaler Drug Recall Notification website to review all current recalls and address appropriately.

10. Discharge Responsibilities.

Regularly check pharmacy email for discharge updates and communications from other departments.

6.

Contact social workers whenever necessary to assist in this process.

Report to the Director of Pharmacy on any trends by other departments which prevent the timely data entry of this information.

7.

Maintain an accurate record of patient’s own meds, retrieve them prior to discharge and collaborate with the charge nurse which medications will be returned to the pharmacy department for destruction as per the psychiatrist’s order.

11. Retrieve, maintain and deliver the Emergency Boxes to and from the Nursing Office and Medication rooms.

1. Check for expiration dates and replenishment needs of boxes.

12. Monthly Nursing Unit Inspections.

1. Complete and timely documentation of condition of medication rooms. 2. Report to the Director of pharmacy any discrepancies or concerns, including maintenance by nursing of proper temperatures in the room and refrigerator, any undated opened multidose bottles or vials, any unusual activities in the Pyxis for that unit.

13. Maintenance of Orderly, Organized, Clean workspace in Pharmacy Department.

14. Attend Pharmacy Staff Meetings and in-services.

15. Be a liaison between the pharmacy department and other departments in the hospital, presenting a professional and courteous demeanor at all times while on duty.

1. At all times, present a professional demeanor and appearance, wearing freshly laundered Lab Coats, name tags and clean and neat hair (if long hair, pulled back, not worn down)

16. .Monitor Pharmacy department Refrigerator and Room Temperatures, maintain Logs.

17. Filing and other administrative duties as requested by the Director of Pharmacy.

18. Prepare and label Unit Dose Medications from Bulk Containers, accurately.

19. Assist the Director of Pharmacy in administrative tasks, documentation, creating and maintaining necessary forms in the department.

Position Requirements

1.

Experience

a. Knowledge of use and dispensing of medications. b. Knowledge and ability to read and comprehend pyxis fill lists and reports relating to medications and workflow. c. Preferable 3 years experience in a hospital setting. 2.

Education

a. High School Diploma or equivalent b. Pharmacy Technician Certification.
