SUMMARY

Baystate Health is seeking a dedicated and dependable OR Assistant to join our Perioperative Services team at Baystate Wing Hospital in Palmer, MA.

Working under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse, the OR Assistant performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities that support the safe and efficient operation of the surgical suite. This role works closely with nurses, surgeons, anesthesia providers, technicians, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure exceptional patient care while maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient perioperative environment.

Responsibilities

include assisting with operating room turnover and setup, transporting and positioning patients, cleaning and inspecting equipment, stocking supplies, assisting with pre-operative patient preparation, and retrieving blood products from Transfusion Medicine Services as directed by a Registered Nurse or Coordinator. This position reports to the Manager of Perioperative Services or a designated member of the leadership team and performs other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with operating room turnover and room setup to promote efficient patient flow and on-time surgical starts.
  • Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures by ensuring equipment and supplies are clean, organized, and available.
  • Clean, inspect, and maintain equipment according to established infection prevention and safety standards.
  • Identify and report equipment concerns, remove faulty equipment from service, and notify the Charge Nurse or Suite Coordinator.
  • Follow all infection prevention, body substance precaution, and personal protective equipment (PPE) policies.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality while interacting with patients and their families.
  • Assist with maintaining established inventory levels by stocking supplies and replenishing blanket warmers throughout the day.
  • Provide necessary equipment and support to the surgical team as needed.
  • Assist Registered Nurses with transporting patients to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and other nursing units.
  • Assist with patient positioning in the operating room.
  • Support the Heart & Vascular team with pre-operative patient clipping and preparation.
  • Answer department phones and assist with other unit support activities as needed.
  • Participate in orientation, annual mandatory education, and ongoing professional development activities.

Qualifications

  • Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Successful completion of the department orientation program.
  • Strong attention to detail with good hand-eye coordination, mechanical aptitude, and adequate vision and hearing (with or without correction).
  • Ability to think independently and remain calm in a busy surgical environment.
  • Preferred
  • Three to six months of healthcare or patient care experience.

The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.

Requirements
