The University of Miami/UHealth Laboratories Department has an exciting opportunity for a full time Medical Assistant to work in UHealth Doral.
The Medical Assistant (MA) will perform multi-skilled tasks to assist the medical providers. The MA shall assist patients’ healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service. The MA provides hands-on care to patients while adhering to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures, under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician. Oversight responsibilities may be delegated by the physician to a nurse or designee in charge of the unit/clinic.
The MA shall adhere to ethical and legal standards of professional practice, demonstrates professionalism, and recognizes and responds appropriately to emergency situations. The MA provides care within the philosophy, mission, vision and values, as well as within the policies and procedures of the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami. As a professional, monitors the quality of care provided and nurtures a compassionate and healing environment. The MA works directly with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse and/or the Designee in charge of the Unit or Clinic to ensure a safe delivery of care in support of the UHealth mission.

Contributes to team building by participating in unit/clinic programs, meetings, and the clinical preceptor program.

Learns and utilizes available technology resources for communication, documentation, and locating pertinent information regarding clinical situations, diagnosis, and treatments. Attains educational knowledge and competencies that reflect current clinical practice skills
Demonstrates commitment to lifelong learning and is responsible for his/her own professional development and maintenance of knowledge regarding the patient population and assignments.
Ensures compliance with all State and Federal regulatory guidelines, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Meets diverse communication needs of patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP).
Performs professionally within their clinical scope of practice utilizing State, Federal, and the University of Miami’s standards, guidelines, relevant statutes, rules, and regulations. Incorporates protocols and standards of care into daily practice.

Abides by the standards for ethical behavior, therapeutic communication, and protecting the privacy of patient information.
Demonstrate knowledge of basic medical terminology. · Assists providers with physical examinations by preparing the treatment/exam room with proper supplies, instruments, and materials, as directed. ·
Understands the importance of medical and surgical asepsis. Prepares patients for the physician’s care with basic instruction and information regarding examination procedures. ·
Perform routine laboratory tests. · Perform vital signs, EKG, phlebotomy, and document in the patient’s medical record. · Observes and reports changes in the patient’s signs or symptoms. ·
Administers medication safely as directed by the physician. Assists in patient care activities such as walking. · Escorts and transports patients to various hospital locations. · Cleans and/or sterilizes medical instruments while observing principles of sterile technique.
Schedules patients for tests and completes required forms for laboratory work.
Provides patients with the provider’s care instructions and information. · Maintains accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
Orders, stocks, and inventory supplies, and assists in performing clerical duties. · Adheres to University and unit-level Policies & Procedures and safeguards the University’s assets.
Designee in charge of the unit shall assign specific functions and competencies pertinent to the unit. Physician in charge shall review and sign off on all Medical Assistants’ competencies and evaluations.
Medical Assistants 1 (MA 1) working in Hospital-based units will not perform any type of medication administration.
Required: · High school diploma or equivalent
· Medical Assistant certificate of completion from a program or institute accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency, approved by the US Department of Education, or affiliated with an approved accrediting body. Work experience may be accepted in lieu of a Medical Assistant education certificate; however, a post-education Medical Assistant certification must be presented or obtained.
Certification and Licensing: (Proof upon application):
· Credentialed Medical Assistant certification from a recognized accrediting or certifying organization (see approved Certifications listed below).
· Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - Certification from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)®
· Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (Certification from American Medical Technologists (AMT)
· Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) (Certification from National Healthcare Association (NHA)
· National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) credential is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA)
· Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) obtained by the National Association for Health Professionals. (NAHP)

If the Medical Assistant has not obtained a recognized Credentialed Medical Assistant certification at the time of hire, certification must be obtained within 12 months of the date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Additional certification: · American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers
