Minimum Education

Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or Medical Technology certifications from an accredited institution.

Job Summary

Tests lab specimens to ensure accurate and quality results for patient care. Recognize problems, identify the causes, and find solutions even when no preset criteria are present. Confirm and verify results through an in-depth knowledge of quality control, testing techniques, instrumentation, and regulatory requirements.

Essential

Functions: Be familiar with and able to perform the position duties listed in the lab assistant, phlebotomist, or accessioner job decriptions if necessary. Is familiar with and complies with all safety regualtions in the fire code and CDC blood and body fluid precautions. Collects and prepares human samples for analysis. Stores and transports samples using appropriate preservation methods. Specimens may include blood, urine, sputum, feces, exudates, secretions, or other body fluids. Be familiar with all testing procedures in the manuals for each section of the laboratory. Recognize and correct basic instrument malfunctions. Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains any clinical instrument or equipment. Conducts established quality control procedures on analytical tests, eequipment, reagents, media and products; evalutates results of quality control and implements corrective action when indicated. Maintains the work area in a clean, orderly condition that ensures that the workplace is in comliance with the federal saftey and hygiene policies. Keeps Lab Supervisor informed of activities including unusual patient data or results, instrumentation problems, and public relation problems.

Requires a Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or Medical Technology certifications. Must be able to perform lab assistant and phlebotomy duties while complying with CDC safety precautions.
