  • Category: Health CareThe overall purpose of the medication aide position is to administer oral and topical medications to residents. Incumbents perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations, and consistent with facility policies. Incumbents also perform routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort, and well being of theresidents. Qualifications State approved medication administration certification (whererequired). Complete familiarity with duties of a certified nursingassistant. Highly developed observation skills aredesirable. Functional literacy in English isrequired. Tolerance, patience, empathy and concern aredesirable. Vision must be adequate to read medication labels,etc. Essential Functions Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with any state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.
  • Must demonstrate knowledi:1e of five rii:1hts of medication administration. May take and record vital signs of residents as assigned or as may be required by certain medications. Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately. Observes for and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse on the appropriate shift. Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy. Must be able to push/pull medication cart for extended periods. Must be able to perform moderate to heavy lifting. Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods of time. Documents reason for and response to PRN medications in a timely manner. May dispense narcotics and must account for them under the supervision of the licensed (or charge) nurse per facility policy. Properly secures medication carts/medication rooms per state/federal regulations and facility policy. Attends facility education in-services. Other Functions May make observation rounds under the supervision of the licensed nurse (or charge nurse) on the shift May supervise nursing assistants/orderlies as assigned by the charge nurse Follows facility safety policies and guidelines in effect (facility, state, federal) Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Requires a state-approved medication administration certification and familiarity with certified nursing assistant duties. Must possess functional English literacy and the physical ability to lift heavy objects and stand for long periods.
