About the role

  • Fridays from 9:00am-5:00pm
  • School year: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays afterschool (between 3-4 pm) for about 2-4 hours. We are seeking a patient, attentive, and engaging DSP to support a friendly and social child in Milwaukie. The ideal candidate will be calm, consistent, and able to use simple, clear communication while promoting independence and confidence. The client is verbal and enjoys interacting with others but may need support expressing herself when upset. She benefits from structured, predictable routines and step‑by‑step guidance. She is working on potty training and needs hourly bathroom support, wears underwear at home, and a pull‑up in the community. She has a diagnosis of Autism and Dyspraxia, which affects her balance and coordination and requires attentive supervision for safety.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure appropriate hygiene routines, including supporting her to wear underwear at home during the day and a pull‑up in the community, while actively building her independence with bathroom usage.
  • Provide supervision and support during community outings, ensuring safety and positive interactions.
  • Use simple, clear communication and step-by-step instructions to support understanding.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children with developmental disabilities, Autism, or similar support needs preferred.
  • Patient, calm, but able to maintain strong boundaries
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to simplify instructions. *Client is under 18 years old, transportation is not allowed/required

Direct Support Professional (DSP) / In Home Care Giver Responsibilities and Duties: This role involves caring for a client on an individual basis in their home environment as well as taking them out into the community to learn skills and socialize. This role varies depending on the client but can involve teaching skills of independent living such as self-care, behavior management, budgeting, cooking, shopping and cleaning. Family Relief Resources is not a physical facility -100% of activities happen in the community or a client’s home.

The day-to-day duties of the DSP role requires

  • Smart Phone
  • The state requires all client visits to be tracked with GPS location verification at clock in/out. You will need a smart phone to access the timekeeping application once you arrive at the client’s location. Driving
  • Have a valid license and car with current insurance. Some clients will need transportation. Documenting
  • Must create and enter specific progress notes after each shift. Also, a progress report is due once per quarter. Scheduling
  • Each DSP has a set schedule and must be able to maintain this with clients. Reliability
  • Because Family Relief Resources is not a facility, we need reliable employees who can work independently, show up for their shifts, and be excellent communicators with their client’s families and with our agency. Patient, Kind, and Positive
  • Helping those with disabilities requires a person who can be patient in all situations, show kindness, and have a positive attitude toward the client and other members of the client’s family even in challenging situations. Flexibility
  • Being able to adjust to different types of personalities and disabilities from day to day.

Minimum Job Requirements

18 years or older Pass a Criminal History Check. Work a minimum of 15 hours per month. CPR and First Aid Certificate (within 3 months of hire) State required online training courses (pre-hire and within 3 months of hire) Continuing Education (24 hours per year) Basic knowledge of technology, including the ability to use a smartphone for timekeeping, submitting daily and quarterly shift reports, communication with office and client family, and additional requirements as needed. Has direct experience working with children and/or adults with varying levels of support needs (Including experience with intellectual and/or behavioral disabilities). Understand requirements of maintaining confidentiality and safeguarding individual information. Be literate and capable of understanding written and oral orders. Be able to communicate with individuals, health care providers, case managers, and appropriate others. Be able to respond to emergency situations when services are being delivered.
