What You Should Know About the ACS Nurse Practitioner Role

Job Summary

The Acute Care Surgery Services Nurse Practitioner provides advanced, patient-centered care to surgical and acute care patients through comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management within the scope of practice. Working collaboratively with Acute Care Surgeons and the interdisciplinary healthcare team, the Nurse Practitioner delivers high-quality, evidence-based care, performs bedside procedures, coordinates treatment plans, educates patients and families, and ensures timely documentation and regulatory compliance. This role promotes positive patient outcomes through clinical expertise, effective communication, professional accountability, and a commitment to safety, quality, and continuity of care.

ACS Nurse Practitioner Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Graduate from an accredited advanced practice nursing program.
• Master’s
• Degree: Nursing
• Minimum of 2–3 years of advanced practice experience in an acute care, hospitalist, trauma, emergency medicine, critical care, or surgical or surgery clinic setting or management of acute and complex medical conditions.
• 3-5 Plus years of experience as an NP IN Acute Care Surgery, Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Hospital Medicine, or Emergency Medicine or managing a broad range of acute and Chronic Medical conditions will be considered.
• Previous experience rounding on inpatient surgical patients and participating in surgical consult services, or managing postoperative patients, surgical complications, wound care, or care transitions
• Prior RN experience in Acute Care Surgery, Trauma Surgery, General Surgery, Surgical Clinic, or Hospital Surgical Services a plus.
• Experience with CMS, Medicare, Medicaid, HIPAA and other regulatory requirements.
• Proficiency in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and clinical documentation.
• Clinical
• Competence: A strong foundation in clinical knowledge and skills is crucial. You should have a deep understanding of medical conditions, diagnostic tests, treatment options, and medications commonly encountered in a hospital setting. This includes proficiency in physical assessment, interpretation of laboratory and diagnostic tests, and the ability to develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans.

• Thinking: Inpatient NPs often face complex and rapidly changing patient situations. The ability to think critically and make sound clinical judgments is essential. You should be able to analyze information, prioritize tasks, and make timely decisions that optimize patient outcomes.
• Communication: Effective communication is vital in an acute care surgery program. You need to communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and their families, as well as collaborate with other healthcare professionals. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and the ability to provide information in a way that patients and their families can understand are essential.
• Teamwork and
• Collaboration: APRN will work closely with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals. The ability to collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary team is crucial for providing coordinated and comprehensive care. This includes sharing information, seeking input, and respecting the expertise of others.

• Initiative: Inpatient NPs often take a leadership role in coordinating patient care, managing complex cases, and advocating for patients. Having a proactive approach, taking initiative, and being able to adapt to changing situations are important qualities in this role.

• Organization: As inpatient APRN and follow up outpatient clinic APRN you will often have a high patient load and need to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Strong time management and organizational skills are necessary to prioritize responsibilities, manage documentation, and ensure efficient and effective patient care.
