About the role

The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting high-quality blood specimens from diverse patient populations while ensuring patient comfort. Additional duties include specimen labeling, registration via computer, and assisting with laboratory inventory and processing.

Summary

A Phlebotomist at MyMichigan Health - Alpena ensures a patient is comfortable while collecting a quality specimen that provides accurate results to assist the provider in the patient's diagnosis and treatment.

Responsibilities

  • (10%)
  • Greets the public in a professional, cheerful manner. (15%)
  • Answers telephone and directs inquires to appropriate persons. (20%)
  • Draws blood properly with minimum discomfort and rarely misses a vein on a patient. (15%)
  • Positively identifies and labels specimens by following patient and specimen identification policies. Uses the computer to register and accession specimens. (15%)
  • Knows various needles, anticoagulants, special handling, and preparation of tests that are performed. (5%)
  • Assists with inventory and putting away supplies. (5%)
  • Assists with specimen processing. (15%)
  • Performs other related miscellaneous duties. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement as required by the Hospital and the job description. Understands and is accountable for the Hospital's customer service standards.

  • Requires the completion of a formal phlebotomy program that includes both classroom and practical (on-the-job) experience or has equivalent education or experience.
  • Must know and practice universal precaution procedures in the performance of daily duties.
  • Must use electronic data processing equipment in performing daily duties.
  • Must be able to work with neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric populations.
  • PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
  • Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
  • Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
  • Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.
  • May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
  • Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.
  • Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
  • Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.
  • May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
  • Physical Demand Level: Light.
  • Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
