About the role

The Wound Care Technician supports patients by performing basic nursing care, monitoring vital signs, and executing wound care procedures. They are responsible for documenting patient status, applying dressings, and assisting with activities of daily living under RN supervision.

Solara Specialty Hospitals McAllen is a long-term acute care (LTAC) hospital specializing in the treatment of patients recovering from post-intensive care and medically complex conditions.

Our hospital provides both intensive care and telemetry-level services, offering advanced monitoring and support for patients requiring extended medical care.

With a multidisciplinary team dedicated to personalized treatment plans, we focus on helping patients achieve significant recovery and transition to the next level of care.

Job Summary The Wound Care Technician has the responsibility of supporting the mission of the hospital, which is to provide patients, ranging in age from 18 years to geriatric, with the highest quality of healthcare, within an atmosphere of genuine caring.

The Wound Care Technician also assists the licensed personnel to carry out the responsibility in supporting the mission of the hospital.

In addition, the Wound Care Technician assists patients with activities of daily living; basic nursing care needs and maintains a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse.

Essential Functions Demonstrates ability to recognize patient or environmental emergencies and initiate appropriate alarms (call Code Blue, Code Red, etc.).

Reports changes in patient status and documents wound care procedures appropriately.

Recognizes pressure points and appropriately positions patient to off-load pressure using pillow bridging and appropriate pressure relief tools.

Performs basic monitoring of patients (i.e. vital signs, wound photographs, intake & output) and collects specimens for diagnostic studies (i.e. wound cultures); documents information on wound sheet in patient medical record accurately and in a timely manner.

Supports individualized plan of care by assisting patient with activities of daily living, personal care, nutritional/ fluid needs, elimination, ambulation and exercise.

Applies skin prevention protocols and assists with wound dressing changes, applies dressings as ordered; cleanses wound according to treatment plan.

Performs basic procedures to include, but not limited to, assisting patients with elimination needs, skin care and oral care.

Must read, write and speak fluent English.

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Ability to chart patient information correctly.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of executives, managers, clients, customers, and the public.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral and/or diagram form.

Ability to define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.

Ability to project a professional image.

Must be able to meet physical demands including standing, walking, bending and transporting.

Must be able to work in a stressful and busy environment.

Must be able to utilize good judgment, demonstrate patience and maintain a professional demeanor.

Demonstrates good customer service skills.

Demonstrates the ability to perform technical skills outlined in the job performance standards.

Able to provide basic nursing care to patients of various ages from early adult to geriatric.

Working knowledge and ability to apply professional standards of practice in job situations.

Demonstrates honesty and integrity at all times in care and use of patient and hospital property.

Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks/responsibilities and complete duties within allotted time.

Participate in hospital wide patient safety program identifying risks to patient safety and reducing healthcare errors.

Comply with HIPAA regulatory requirements.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education High School Diploma or Equivalent, including education equivalent to completion of secondary school or demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the role (Preferred) Licenses/Certification Nursing Assistant Certification required. Successful completion of wound care competency exams Must maintain current Healthcare Provider BLS certification throughout employment. Experience Minimum two (2) years’ experience as a nursing assistant

Candidates must have a High School Diploma, a Nursing Assistant Certification, and current BLS certification. A minimum of two years of experience as a nursing assistant is required.
