About the role

Provides pastoral ministry and spiritual support to patients, families, and hospital employees. Conducts religious worship and performs spiritual functions based on the beliefs and practices of various faiths.

Reporting to the Director of Spiritual Care & Education, the Chaplain is responsible for responding to the spiritual needs of patients, families and staff throughout the organization. The Chaplain provides spiritual support to patients and their loved ones who are confronting serious illness, making difficult treatment decisions, feeling alienated or alone, or experiencing conflict, despair or feelings of hopelessness. The Chaplain functions as a team member of the Department of Spiritual Care & Education at Mount Sinai Morningside (MSM) and throughout the Mount Sinai Health System, and establishes collaborative relationships with the interdisciplinary care team, other professionals, and the communit

Responsibilities

The Principle Duties & Responsibilities of the Chaplain fall under the general mandate to ensure timely and compassionate provision of an array of psycho-spiritually supportive modalities to patients/families/caregivers or staff. Specifically, the Chaplain must: · visit patients on assigned floors, throughout the hospital, and, as appropriate, in outpatient settings. · assess patient and family emotional, spiritual and/or religious needs, support with appropriate interventions, and assess outcomes; · demonstrate necessary chaplaincy knowledge and skills; · communicate effectively with patients of all demographics served by the hospital; · participate in limited on-call rotation as needed; · maintain relationships with clinical staff and other departments as representative of Department of Spiritual Care and Education; · provide care and support to hospital staff with 1:1 engagement as well as through the facilitation of groups debriefs; · participate in interdisciplinary meetings, as requested or assigned, to provide insight into patients’ spiritual well-being; · liaise as needed with hospital priests and community clergy in service of patients’ religious needs; · mentor and orient clinical pastoral education (CPE) students; · participate in/contribute to chaplaincy research initiatives; · present didactics on spiritual care topics to outside departments and/or units, as requested; · participate in organizing and leading interfaith holiday services, memorials, and special events, and lead or facilitate religion-specific services/observances, as well as activities connected to Spiritual Care Week, Wellness Week, and Nurses’ Week; · fulfill administrative and documentation requirements, including appropriate charting in the electronic medical record and drafting of month-end reports with relevant data consistent with research goals of the Mount Sinai Health System; · practice timely and open communication with all departments or team-members involved in common projects; · serve on hospital bioethics committee and others as invited; · have capability of competently covering basic department operations in the absence of other staff; · provide spiritual support and consultation to staff and the broader community during declared emergencies; · undertake, facilitate or enhance hospital-community engagement, as may be designated by the department or institution; · adhere to the code of ethics of the Association of Professional Chaplains. · maintain board-certification by national chaplain association once acquired. · other relevant duties as assigned.

Qualifications

3 years of experience as a clinical chaplain Experience working with public Successful completion of four quarters of Clinical Pastoral Education in an accredited program Certification by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains or the College of Chaplains Non-Bargaining Unit, BUZ - Pastoral Care And Education - STL, Mount Sinai St. Luke's

Requirements

Requires 3 years of experience as a clinical chaplain and successful completion of four quarters of Clinical Pastoral Education. Certification by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains or the College of Chaplains is required.
