About the role

Responsible for the collection, ordering, and submission of blood and non-blood specimens while ensuring patient safety and comfort. Manages specimen integrity through proper labeling, processing, and timely delivery to the laboratory.

CURRENT HOLLAND HOSPITAL EMPLOYEES- Please apply through Find Jobs from your Workday employee account. This position works M-Th 0600-1330 and has an every 3rd weekend rotation 0400-0800.

The Phlebotomist works under the general supervision of the Lab Preanalytical Manager and serves as an integral member of the Laboratory department. The Phlebotomist is responsible for the collection, ordering and submission of samples for analysis, while assuming responsibility for the preparation, safety and comfort of patients during the procedure. The phlebotomist is expected to possess strong communication skills, critical thinking and the ability to interact with multiple members of the healthcare delivery team. Basic computer skills is required to access computer resources in the Hospital Information System and the Laboratory Information System. This position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her area. Job Type: Part Time (56 hours every two weeks) Shift Length: 6am-1:30pm Wage Range: $16.88-$23.64 Weekend Requirements: Every third weekend (4am-8am) Education Requirements:

High school diploma/GED, or higher education

Valid State of Michigan drivers license

BLS/CPR through the American Heart Association Sample Collection & Integrity: Utilizing standard venipuncture techniques, appropriate blood specimens are collected and integrity maintained by correct collection protocol. Performs specialized blood collection tests such as blood cultures, adhering to defined protocol with no deviations. Adheres to strict standards when labeling blood specimens/non-blood specimens and provides the required information as well as ensuring adequate patient identification with each patient encounter. Follows all defined policies and procedures for universal blood and body fluid precautions and Infection Control practices. Maintains appropriate professionalism at all times explaining blood collection to patients while ensuring patient rights, safety, privacy, confidentiality and "customer relations" philosophy. Performs Urine Drug Screen and COC collection, Blood Alcohol, and H. Pylori Breath test according to defined protocol. Workflow & Assigned Duties: Manage patient workload. Demonstrates competence with Laboratory Information System. Processes specimens ensuring proper identification and monitoring specimen integrity for testing. This includes specimen sorting, computer receipt/changing orders, centrifugation, and specimen aliquoting. Responsible for delivery of identified specimens to laboratory either via pneumatic tube system or manual transport in a timely manner to ensure accurate reporting and turn around times. Transport specimen between facilities as assigned. Responsible for maintaining phlebotomy trays and phlebotomy supply inventory. Performs off-site phlebotomy as assigned. Use Resources: Identifies when questions or activities are beyond their personal skill mix and uses critical thinking skills to determine the most appropriate resource to utilize. Maintains current knowledge and skill needed to effectively and accurately access available resources (i.e. SOFT, Mayo, etc.) Demonstrates service recovery by involving Customer Service, Patient Relations, or Preanalytical Services Manager. Demonstrate ability to properly utilize Vocera. Quality & Education: Attends Phlebotomy staff meetings or reads and acknowledges meeting minutes. Demonstrates current knowledge of the organizational occurrence reporting process and expectations. Identifies opportunities to participate with quality improvement initiatives/teams. Maintains CAP regulations and guidelines in all phlebotomy practices. Order Entry: Performs all Laboratory order entry accurately. Uses critical thinking to identify the need to contact Diagnostics Customer Service for assistance. Understands how to order specimens collected on different days. Demonstrates ability to verify medical necessity. Identifies when to present the Advanced Beneficiary Notification (ABN) to the patient and how to explain the ABN to the patient. Helps the patient to understand what to expect related to receiving a bill if initial check shows that Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will not reimburse the hospital for the ordered testing. Understands and communicates when the specimen needs to be collected within a specific time frame or when the patient is fasting. Demonstrates ability to identify a compliant diagnostic order. Knows how to contact the physician if a compliant order is needed or if edits need to be made to an existing order. Holland Hospital is an Equal Opportunity Employer, please see our EEO policy

Requirements

Requires a high school diploma or GED, a valid Michigan driver's license, and BLS/CPR certification from the American Heart Association. Must possess basic computer skills and the ability to provide age-appropriate care to patients.
