About the role

The pharmacist will collaborate with the oncology healthcare team to provide clinical recommendations on medication dosing and supportive care. They are responsible for interpreting physician orders, dispensing medications, and ensuring compliance with state and federal pharmacy laws.

Purpose

As the preeminent institution in western Pennsylvania for the delivery of cancer care, the performance of basic, translational, and clinical research, and the education of the next generation of cancer researchers and physicians, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is exceptionally well-positioned to contribute to the global effort to reduce the burden of cancer. UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is currently Regular Full Time Oncology Pharmacist to support the Medical Oncology Network Pharmacy locations in Monroeville, Shadyside, & Natrona Heights, PA. This position will work a Full Time Monday through Friday daylight schedule with no holidays or weekends with a primary focus on floating between these offices and may float as needed to our other local pharmacy locations. The pharmacist will collaborate with other members of the oncology health care team and provide clinical recommendations regarding dose adjustments of medications and/or additional supportive care medications, when appropriate, based on the drug regimen, labs results and toxicities contributing to optimal patient outcomes. The Pharmacy professional will ensure the provision of cost-effective pharmacotherapy, provide experiential education for present and future healthcare practitioners, and support drug-related research.

Responsibilities

Interpret and evaluate physician orders and prescriptions to prepare, calculate, and dispense appropriate medication dosage forms for inpatient and outpatient treatment in accordance with the Pennsylvania Pharmacy Practice Act, Federal Drug Laws, and other regulatory organizations. Identify and report suspected adverse drug reactions accurately and in a timely manner. Sustain the formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic interchange protocols, and promoting rational drug therapy selection. Review, maintain, and screen patient medication records and profiles for allergies, drug interactions and therapeutic duplications while entering orders and/or verifying medications. Organize daily operational duties and assist in the supervision of pharmacy technicians, pharmacy aides, student interns and other ancillary personnel involved in providing pharmaceutical care. Adhere to all regulatory requirements, professional standards of practice, and hospital quality management policies and procedures in providing pharmaceutical care. Communicate with physicians and nurses to ensure prompt clarification of orders that are unclear, illegible, or incomplete. Provide drug information and/or educational programs to healthcare professionals and pharmacy students. Utilize all available computer systems and technologies in the provision of pharmaceutical care Fill prescription orders in accordance with State and Federal regulations, utilizing technological resources and equipment. Prepare and dispense intravenous admixture solutions, as required, using aseptic technique in an accepted sterile product preparation area.

Graduate of an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy B.S in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree Required: Current licensure as a Pharmacist in practicing state Entry Level – no previous experience required; pharmacist experience preferred. Oncology experience preferred

Candidates must be a graduate of an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy with a BS or PharmD degree and hold a current pharmacist license. While entry-level candidates are accepted, experience in pharmacy and oncology is preferred.
