What you will do Performs related special staining techniques, which may include immunohistochemical, immunoflourescent, and enzyme histochemical stains.
Operates computerized equipment for processing and staining specimens.
Uses the laboratory computer system to add, cancel, and verify completed orders.
Performs and documents quality control and preventive maintenance procedures.
Troubleshoots instruments, processing, and staining processes.
Places engineering and biomed service requests as needed.
Prepares stock and working reagents and maintains an adequate supply.
Receives and processes specimens, answers the telephone, and greets guests to the department.
Reports all unacceptable quality control and instrument failures to a senior technologist, pathology coordinator, manager, and/or Pathologist, and documents discrepancies and their resolutions.
Takes immediate action to resolve quality and patient-related issues.
Assumes two or more of the following responsibilities: outside facility frozen section room maintenance, projects, teaching, tech in charge, reagent validations, and evaluation of new technology.
Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Maintains an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program, including performance and evaluation of key quality indicators.
Follows established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agencies requirements.
Practices infection control and safety policies.
Maintains confidentiality of patient records, hospital, and departmental matters at all times.
A bachelor’s degree is required. An associates degree and two (2) years of directly related Histotechnology experience (in addition to the requirements listed in the Experience section) may substitute for the bachelor’s degree. Graduate from an approved school of Histotechnology is required. One (1) year of laboratory experience is required. Department-specific competencies may be required based on the area of assignment. Maintains a current Florida license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist (Qualification: Histology Technologist). Certified as a Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL), or eligible for either certification through a professional laboratory agency such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
