About the role

Collect blood specimens from patients using various techniques while ensuring specimen integrity and patient safety. Perform related clerical duties, maintain supplies, and adhere to hospital safety and hygiene protocols.

Collects blood from patients following established procedures and polies. Maintains the integrity and quality of the specimen throughout collection and transportation. Responsible for the safety and comfort of patients.

Responsibilities

  • 1.
  • Interact courteously and professionally with laboratory customers; respond to requests promptly.
  • 2.
  • Procure blood specimens by venipuncture, heel stick, and fingerstick, following patient identification procedures.
  • 3.
  • Instruct patients on specimen collection procedures, including non-blood samples as needed.
  • 4.
  • Demonstrate dependability and reliability, prioritizing tasks to meet departmental needs.
  • 5.
  • Collect and transport specimens, adhering to safety procedures.
  • 6.
  • Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies, including quality control, safety, and hygiene protocols, this includes appropriate PPE.
  • 7.
  • Perform related clerical duties, entering accurate demographic and test information create tracking logs into systems.
  • 8.
  • If applicable, perform testing.
  • 9.
  • Train and orient new employees and students as required.
  • 10.
  • Notify technical staff and supervisors of any unusual or problematic incidents.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies, using materials efficiently to control costs.
  • 11.
  • Participate in continuing education for phlebotomy to ensure the latest techniques and safety protocols are followed.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to healthcare laws and regulations.
  • 12.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed to Ensure Smooth Operation of the Department/Unit.

Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent. Knowledge of phlebotomy and Medical Terminology.

Experience

Completion of an approved phlebotomy certification course or equivalent experience with on the job training.

Licensure

Certification in phlebotomy preferred but not required.

Special skills

Basic computer and keyboarding skills required. Ability to solve problems and work independently.
