About the role

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing and maintaining sterile environments and equipment in the operating room. They anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide essential support from pre-op to post-op to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION Anticipates the needs of the surgical team. Assists with the teaching of newly hired technologists and student technologists. Serves as a role model to new employees and other staff members. Communicates effectively with patients, staff members and physicians.
  • Adheres to standards, including but not limited to: unit and hospital policies and procedures, regulatory standards, and patient safety goals. Demonstrates appropriate and correct case preparation. Establishes and maintains sterile field and assure team maintains sterile environment independently. Applies basic knowledge of instrumentations to multiple surgical cases. Corrects deficiencies at the case level. Performs technical duties involving care, preparation and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment in the operating rooms in order to provide a safe and effective environment. Completes unit/department specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired. One (1) year of experience as a surgical technologist; or completion of an accredited surgical tech program, the MU Health Care Surgical Tech program, or military training may be substituted for the experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Training and experience in all areas of specialty and Trauma (Level I) call. Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and requires ambulating, reaching, and moving objects weighing up to and over 20 lbs.

Requirements

Candidates must have one year of experience as a surgical technologist or completion of an accredited surgical tech program. Preferred qualifications include CST, CORST, or TS-C certifications.
