The Medical Assistant plays a key role in supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care by assisting providers with both clinical and administrative responsibilities. This position works closely with patients, providers, pharmacies, hospitals, and other healthcare professionals to ensure excellent patient care and an outstanding patient experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Medical Assistant is responsible for performing clinical and administrative duties under the direct supervision of a licensed provider. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Perform selected nursing and administrative duties to support providers. Escort patients to exam rooms, conduct intake interviews, obtain vital signs, and update medical history, medications, and allergies in the electronic medical record (EMR). Assist providers with basic wound care and dressing changes. Administer medications as ordered by the provider, manage medication samples, and assist with medication refill assistance programs. Administer injections, collect blood specimens, perform EKGs, assist with gynecological exams, and support other basic clinical procedures. Collect and process laboratory specimens, including urine, blood, and sputum, and perform routine laboratory testing. Maintain clean, organized, and sanitized exam and treatment rooms while ensuring supplies and equipment are properly stocked and within expiration dates. Facilitate communication between patients and providers by taking messages and assisting with scheduling tests or treatments when referral staff are unavailable. Safely dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with applicable regulations. Document and track patient immunizations and assist with vaccine inventory management. Maintain medication sample logs and assist with clinical inventory. Fax provider orders, prescriptions, and other required documentation. Clean, sterilize, and maintain medical instruments and equipment. Participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures. Attend all required training, including OSHA, Emergency Preparedness, and PHC-specific education. Comply with all HIPAA, CMS, and organizational policies and procedures. Support Meaningful Use and Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) initiatives. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates should possess

Knowledge of medical office procedures, exam room preparation, and patient safety protocols. Ability to obtain vital signs and assist with treatments under provider supervision. Strong organizational, documentation, and time management skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills and the ability to navigate electronic medical records. Ability to work collaboratively with providers, clinical staff, patients, and administrative personnel. Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations. Knowledge of chronic disease management and routine patient care processes. Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent required. Certificate or diploma from an accredited Medical Assistant program required. Zero to four (0–4) years of experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting preferred.
