Summary : The Clinical Laboratory Assistant performs pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic processes, and may perform specimen collection.

Job Description

Schedule: Phlebotomy position with outpatient, inpatient and ED draws. Some lab duties. Experience preferred but will train M-F variable 4-8 hour shifts between 5a-5p. Weekend and holiday rotation of 4 hours (5a-9a) and on call hours. Open shift pick up, and supporting another campus is desired. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: Obtains specimens from inpatients and outpatients following proper identification protocols and appropriate techniques to maintain the integrity of the specimens, and prioritizes collections to meet established turnaround times. Supports patient testing by performing waived testing, loading analyzers, and performing lab functions, as needed, to meet patient demands. Adheres to OSHA and ThedaCare department policies for specimen collection and handling to ensure a safe work environment. Provides training for new lab and non-lab team members to retain top talent. Performs specimen-related computer functions with accuracy and speed including entering physician’s orders, processing cancelations, and entering add-on tests to ensure regulatory compliance. Enters, activates, and/or reviews physician orders in the system with accuracy for patient safety and quality. Maintains supplies and assists with inventory and ordering to ensure the availability of supplies to perform patient care responsibilities. Performs special specimen collections (i.e., legal specimen collections) to support patient testing and follow up as required by law.

Qualifications

High School diploma or GED preferred Must be 18 years of age Completion of BLS Certification will be required for candidates working at ThedaCare Medical Center – Wild Rose

Physical demands

Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties

Work environment

Works in a medical setting with high risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, and biohazardous materials Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock Occasional contact with aggressive and or combative patients Use of computers throughout the work day Frequent use of keyboard with repetitive motion of hands, wrists, and fingers

Requirements

High school diploma or GED is preferred and candidates must be at least 18 years old. BLS certification is required for those working at the Wild Rose medical center.
