About the role

Perform routine and special staining, microtomy, and tissue embedding according to SOPs and guidelines. Conduct necropsies, tissue identification, and quality control reviews of slides for pathology submission.

Essential Responsibilities Routine staining- use and programming of autostainer; reagent preparation; use of coverslipper and manual coverslipping Microtomy – produce quality sections free of aesthetic defects; frozen sectioning Special staining – follow specified procedure(s); reagent preparation, including single, serial, and concentration dilutions Trimming - tissue identification; trimming per SOP and NIEHS guidelines Embedding - per SOP; use and programming of tissue processors; development of processing schedules Inventory materials; bag and store tissues Microtomy – produce quality sections free of aesthetic defects; frozen sectioning Operation and maintenance of the cryostat for frozen sectioning QC review of slides for submission to Pathology Additional Responsibilities Necropsy - tissue identification; dissection according to SOP w/o trauma; gross descriptions per provided guidelines; timed necropsies Work in a team environment with a professional and positive attitude Other duties as needed Management Responsibilities: None Minimum Acceptable Qualifications Education: B.S. degree in Biology or related field M.S. degree in health sciences Experience: > 8 years in Histology ≥ 5 years in Histology Skills: Experience with animal tissue Proficiency with immunohistochemistry, special stains, tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, and microscopy ASCP Registered Histology Technician preferred Personnel Supervised None Supervision Received Infrequently receives supervision and instructions Infrequently exercises discretionary authority Working Environment Primarily laboratory/animal facility (respirator, safety glasses, lab coat, shoe covers, head cover, and gloves, as needed) Occasional office work Occasional weekend, holiday, and evening work required *This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience.

Requirements

Requires a B.S. in Biology or related field, or an M.S. in health sciences, with at least 5 to 8 years of histology experience. Proficiency in immunohistochemistry and ASCP Registered Histology Technician certification are preferred.
