About the role

The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for performing venous and capillary blood collections and processing specimens for analysis. They also provide general laboratory support and ensure compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.

Position Summary

The Laboratory Assistant processes outpatient test requests. As a Laboratory Assistant, you will: Perform venous and capillary collection of blood specimens for analysis and process specimens for analysis and reference testing. With supervision, may perform waived and moderately complex testing. May perform chain-of-custody drug collections. Perform various other support services for the laboratory as assigned and maintain required documentation to comply with accrediting agencies. Perform duties consistent with written procedures and regulatory requirements. Support the department in achieving department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, healthy work environment, and integration of intra and inter-departmental activities. Minimum Requirements High School Diploma, Equivalent, or higher Completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended.

Preferred

6 months experience in a hospital or reference laboratory setting, physician office, outpatient clinic, or other medical setting Phlebotomy certification by ASCP or another nationally recognized certifying agency:

National Healthcare Association (NHA) --Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy Examination (CLPlb), American Society of Clinical Pathologists-- Phlebotomy Technician Examination [PBT(ASCP)], International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences (IAPS), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), National Phlebotomy Certification Examination (NPCE), National Phlebotomy Solutions (NPS), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or another national certification as approved by Laboratory Service Line leadership.

The 15-bed emergency department serves approximately 25,000 patients per year. In addition to providing general medical and surgical services, ECU Health Duplin Hospital offers chemotherapy and other cancer infusion interventions and has earned national designation as a Primary Stroke Center. Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, and completion of a structured phlebotomy training course is recommended. Preference is given to candidates with phlebotomy certification from a recognized agency and 6 months of experience in a medical setting.
