About the role

The RN is responsible for preparing patients for surgery and managing Phase II recovery, including facilitating communication between the healthcare team and families. Duties include assessing patient needs, implementing care plans, and performing various therapeutic interventions.

  • Where You’ll Work Penrose - St. Francis Health Services is a full-service, 712-bed acute care provider in Colorado Springs comprising Penrose Hospital, St. Francis Hospital and St. Francis Hospital - Interquest. Penrose Hospital serves as the anchor hospital of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services with 300-licensed beds and the ability to provide tertiary (high tech) medical-surgical services with an emphasis on elective and outpatient care. Established in 1890, Penrose Hospital has grown to become a major health treatment and referral center, specializing in cancer care, cardiac care, emergency trauma care and physical rehabilitation. Job Summary and Responsibilities As our RN, you will assume responsibility for facilitating, communicating, and collaborating with the healthcare team and patient/family to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient, advancing modern nursing through compassionate care. Every day you will promote optimal patient health, well-being, and safety through the nursing process, adhering to patient care standards, guidelines, and the State Nurse Practice Act, and demonstrating personal accountability for relationship-based care and our organizational mission. To be successful in this role, you will be a Registered Nurse with a commitment to compassionate, high-quality patient care, strong communication and collaboration skills, and the ability to apply the nursing process effectively within a supportive, mission-driven environment. Assess patient’s physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs through observation, interview, review of medical records & clinical data. Evaluates patient’s response and intervenes to ensure optimal patient outcome. Develop and implement patient plan of care and observe outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Demonstrate competency in a variety of therapeutic/diagnostic interventions including, but not limited to, IV’s, incision/wound care, medication administration, catheterization, and specimen collections. Thorough and confidential maintenance of patient charts and records. Document ongoing status, interventions, patient response and outcomes in an accurate, timely manner. Use information technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making. Promote, advocate, and collaborate to protect the health and safety and rights of each patient. Provide patient/family education through assessment of patient/family learning readiness, needs, and ability. Provide teaching and evaluate effectiveness of teaching. **Previous PACU/ICU/ED experience required- 1 yr min*
  • Day to Day duties: Prepare patients for surgery and recover Phase II. Approx. 20-35+ cases per day RNs will cover both pre-op and Phase 2 areas, managing 5-6 total patients per shift (this number can change depending on acuity and staffing). Staff are expected to float between Pre-Op and Phase 2. RNs in pre-op/ Phase 2 are responsible for pre-op calls and transports, in addition to the clinical aspects of pre-op and Phase 2 care. Unit does see a few recoveries from other departments, including the GI Lab. OR, Pre Op, PACU are all centrally located on the same floor. OR Suites-16 PACU Bays-16 Prep Op Beds-18 Schedule- PRN- Variable days of week and start times per Surgical Volume and Current Unit needs. TBD with Unit manager and Preop RNCC during interviews. This position requires working holidays (On Call) and being On Call on weekends. The call requirement for weekends is 6 times per six months (3 Primary and 3 Secondary). 8-12 RNs are scheduled daily, Monday-Friday, 0515-2030. This posting is for an evening PRN RN primarily working 1200-2030 but there is some flexibility. Job Requirements Required Associates Degree in Nursing; Nursing Diploma or by endorsement RN License in state of employment Physical Requirements: Medium Work exert/lift up to 50 lbs. force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and/or up to 10lbs. constantly Preferred Bachelors Degree in Nursing One (1) year experience

Requires an Associate Degree in Nursing and a valid RN license in the state of employment. A minimum of one year of experience in PACU, ICU, or ED is required.
