Job Description

Summary: Under the general supervision of the Director and Clinic Manager, responsible for providing quality patient care using the nursing process, the direction of the other nursing staff, and the operation of assigned clinic shift as scheduled. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the clinic. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Performs initial patient assessment utilizing the nursing process and age specific needs, prescribes plan of care for each patient, updating as necessary, to promote continuity of care. Documents initial assessment, delivery of patient care, and other pertinent information in patient’s medical record; monitors documentation of other personnel. Coordinates and performs care of patients; performs, assists, or delegates with skilled procedures. Administers or supervises administration of medications, intravenous fluids, blood, and blood products. Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste. Informs physician of patient’s arrival, general condition, and pertinent physical and emotional findings, and assists the physician with treatments, examinations, and/or patient rounds when indicated. Assists in supervision of patient care given by nursing personnel; evaluates standards of patient care daily; and supervises and verifies accurate transcription of orders as required. Documents in patient’s record. Appropriately prioritizes physician’s, FNP, PA orders. Communicates with patient and his/her family and collaborates with other disciplines for providing emotional support, teaching, and continuum of care. Fulfills environmental duties to include cleaning exam/procedure room instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; sterilize any equipment or instruments according to scheduled maintenance program; keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; restocking exam/ procedure rooms. Checks emergency equipment and drugs each shift as assigned or required. Responds to medical emergencies, initiates CPR or appropriate action, and notifies appropriate personnel. Performs related responsibilities as required or directed. Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the clinic. Performs preceptor duties to new employees to provide needed guidance during orientation. JOB SPECIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Completion of a nursing degree from an accredited program. LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee. Responsible for Continuing Education Units annually. BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position. In specialty clinics, ACLS certification may be required. Certification in area of clinical expertise by recognized authoritative agency desirable. Additional certifications may be required at department’s discretion. EXPERIENCE: N/A

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Skill and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques of the nursing profession as normally acquired through the completion of a diploma, associate, or baccalaureate degree in nursing. Knowledge of policies and procedures of the hospital and completion of skills check sheet for designated areas as acquired through 3-month probationary period. Basic computer skills preferred. Requirements

Requires a nursing degree from an accredited program and current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Tennessee. BLS certification is mandatory, with ACLS potentially required depending on the specialty clinic.
