The OB Flex Team is a highly skilled group of nurses who float across all obstetric and neonatal areas to support staffing needs on both the Downtown and West Campuses.

This team provides flexible, cross-trained coverage to the NICU, Mother Baby, Labor and Delivery, and OB Emergency Department/Antepartum units, ensuring seamless patient care during periods of high census, acuity, or staffing shortages.

By adapting quickly to unit needs, the OB Flex Team enhances continuity of care, supports frontline staff, and helps maintain safe, high-quality outcomes for mothers and newborns across all locations mentioned below: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit East Tower, 4th Floor This dedicated unit consists of 62 beds in 44 private patient rooms and is located in the East Tower.

Credentialed as a Level III NICU, practicing highly technical, state-of-the-art care for high-risk premature babies and full-term newborns in need of specialized care.

Nurses work with neonatologists, cardiologists, surgeons and other medical specialties as a team approach to care and provide the best care for infants.

Mother Baby Unit East Tower, 2nd floor This unit has 40 private rooms for both high risk and low risk postpartum patients, post-operative surgery and medical patients. As part of MercyOne Children’s Hospital the unit also has a newborn nursery. Nursing and medical providers work together as a team to deliver care for the newborn, mother as well as medical patients.

Labor and Delivery Unit East Tower, 3rd Floor This unit includes 15 labor and delivery recovery suites, three surgical suites and four post anesthesia recovery beds. As part of MercyOne Children’s Hospital, the labor and delivery unit offers a variety of birthing methods and pain management options.

OB Emergency Department – Antepartum Unit East Tower, 3rd Floor Part of MercyOne Children’s Hospital this state of the art obstetrical unit cares for low and high risk antepartum patients, pregnant patients greater than 20 weeks with other medical diagnoses.

The unit consists of a seven room triage area designed to assess and observe patients, a 10 bed inpatient area and ultrasound area that is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

POSITION PURPOSE Provides individualized, high-quality nursing care to patients of all ages.

Uses a team approach to delegate and coordinate patient care at admission, transfer, and discharge.

Independently delivers nursing care using the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards, ethical principles, and professional judgment.

Works rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.

Provides nursing care across all units within trained specialty ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.

Assesses, plans, and implements nursing care while ensuring patient comfort.

Practices safe patient handling techniques.

Continues to evaluate assigned patients and provides ongoing treatment.

Anticipates, identifies, and responds to educational and emotional needs of patients and families.

Guides and directs healthcare personnel (i.e.

Patient Care Technicians) in caring for patients.

Maintains knowledge of equipment set-up, maintenance, and use (i.e., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, and drainage devices).

Utilizes safeguards such as IV pump drug library and monitor alarms whenever available to maximize patient safety.

Initiates emergency support measures (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury).

Serves in a charge/leadership role based on skill and unit needs.

When assigned charge, makes patient assignments; triages patients; and problem solves with staff, physicians, patients, families, and ancillary departments.

Takes assigned call as defined in unit policy.

Assists with patient care duties/tasks (i.e., emptying drainage devices, ambulating, and hygiene).

Assists with clerical duties (i.e., maintenance of chart, patient record, and answering phones and call lights).

Maintains patient care supplies, equipment, and environment.

Provides orientation/education for staff, students, and other hospital and community organizations as requested.

Other duties as needed and assigned by the manager.

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current or compact state license as a Registered Nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa. BSN preferred. Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire. Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeks of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Heart Association Basic Life Support. Advanced Cardiac Life Support certified within nine (9) months of hire, if required by your department. Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Requirements

Requires a current Registered Nurse license in Iowa and at least 12 months of RN experience. BLS certification is required within six weeks, and BSN is preferred.
