Provides direct and indirect care to patients in Labor and Delivery, including assisting surgeons during Cesarean sections and other obstetric procedures. Maintains sterile environments, manages surgical instruments, and ensures the readiness of OR and PACU supplies.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of an Obstetric Technician at Hackensack Meridian Health includes: Assists and supports nursing staff with provision of direct and indirect care to the patient. Follows theplan of care as directed by the RN Orders and stocks all supplies for OR, PACU, Labor Rooms and related areas such as warmers, scrubsinks, OR ante-room. Maintains readiness of instruments and supplies for OR and vaginal deliveries. Maintains sterile technique in the operative area including proper scrub, gown and glove techniques. Arranges the operative table appropriately. Passes instruments and maintains accurate sponge andinstrument counts. Assists surgeon in the operating room with procedures such as Cesarean Section, Hysterectomy,Dilation and Curettage, manual removal of placenta, and repair of cervical laceration. Communicates patient information or potential problems to the nurse throughout the shift. Reportstimely and accurate changes in the patient's condition. Makes rounds and responds to patient/family requests for assistance in a timely manner. Promptlyanswers call lights regardless of who is assigned to care for the patient. Collaborates to ensure patient belongings are promptly stored and valuables are safe. Ensures allbelongings are properly gathered, labeled with patient identification and are sent with the patient who isdischarged, transferred or expired. Exercises calm behavior and utilizes appropriate judgment while working in a team approach duringemergency situations. Appropriately participates during crisis situations. Isolates and removes otherpatients and family members. Assists with and reassures patients and families. Stays with a patient inneed. Demonstrates appropriate use of and care for equipment and supplies. Follows procedures andensures equipment is ready to use. Provides for effective and safe patient/customer outcomes through practice, judgment and critical actions. Adheres to current NJ Department of Health regulations, JCAHO and institutional policies andprocedures, and promotes professional ethics/standards. Clinical practice accurately reflects Code ofEthics, the New Jersey Department of Health regulations. Other duties and/or projects as assigned. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior. Lifts a minimum of 25 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 25 lbs. and stands a minimum of 8 hours a day

Qualifications

High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), and/or GED equivalent programs is required AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification is required Certified Surgical Technician or Certified OB Technician (or provides evidence of meeting therequirements of the NJ Surgical Technology Certification law in effect as of 12/21/2011) is required One year of hospital PCT experience preferred Previous OB Tech or Surgical Tech experience in the acute care setting is preferred If you feel that the above description speaks directly to your strengths and capabilities, then please apply today! Requirements

Requires a high school diploma, AHA Basic Health Care Life Support certification, and certification as a Surgical or OB Technician. Previous experience as a Patient Care Technician or in an acute care surgical setting is preferred.
