What You Should Know About the Certified Surgical First Assistant

Job Summary

Under the direction of the clinical manager, and supervision of the surgeon and other medical personnel, the Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) is a highly trained surgical professional who plays a critical role in the operating room, assisting surgeons during procedures. Their responsibilities extend beyond those of a surgical technician. This role must have in-depth knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy, and sterile technique. The CFSA role requires advanced training and certification, demonstrating a higher level of expertise and responsibility in the surgical team.

Certified Surgical First Assistant Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Technical Diploma in Surgical Technology required.
  • Associate Degree in Surgical Technology preferred.
  • Graduate from an accredited surgical first assistant program required.
  • Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) required.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred.
  • BLS/CPR required upon hire or obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • This is a safety sensitive position.

  • Requirements:
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure, with excellent critical thinking and decision making skills
  • Basic proficiency in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care
  • Adequate verbal and written communication skills to interact with patients, families, and healthcare teams
  • Basic flexibility to adapt to changes in patient conditions and unit priorities
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures
  • Ability to maintain a sterile environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy objects, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity
  • Preferred
  • Requirements:
  • Additional coursework in advanced surgical techniques, anatomy, and physiology preferred
  • Several years of hands-on experience as a surgical technologist or surgical assistant, especially in various surgical specialties such as cardiovascular, neurosurgery, or orthopedics
  • Experience with complex and high-risk surgical procedures
  • 2+ years of experience in perioperative area
  • Active membership in professional organizations such as the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST)
  • Proficiency with the latest surgical instruments and technology, including minimally invasive and robotic surgical systems
  • Experience with quality improvement projects and safety initiatives within the surgical department
  • Ability to adapt to new procedures and protocols

Requirements

Requires a high school diploma, a technical diploma in surgical technology, and graduation from an accredited surgical first assistant program. Must hold a CSFA certification and BLS/CPR certification.
